Bronchos Fall In Battle With Pitt State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma fell behind early for the second time this week and the Bronchos couldn't keep pace with Pittsburg State, suffering a 100-76 loss Sunday at Hamilton Field House.

UCO fell to 4-4 on the season and the Bronchos are now 1-3 in MIAA play.

"We didn't play good defense today and got in a big hole and you can't do that against good teams," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "I think most of the time you'll take our offense, but we didn't do a good job on defense today and that hurt us."

UCO trailed 13-0 after just two minutes and 44 seconds of play Sunday. It took the Bronchos 3:34 to score their first basket, a Kassie Boorer layup.

Central Oklahoma did outscore Pitt State 16-14 after the rough start, but that became a theme within the game. UCO cut it to five points in the second quarter, but a late rally by the guests made it 54-36 heading into halftime.

Pittsburg State led by as many as 31 points in the third quarter, and despite UCO outscoring PSU again in the fourth (22-19), it was too much.

Central Oklahoma shot 45.6 percent overall Sunday and went 6-for-18 from behind the 3-point line. The Bronchos added eight free-throws on 11 attempts.

Karly Wadsworth led Central Oklahoma with a game-high 22 points. She went 7-for-15 from the floor, 5-for-11 from behind the arc, tying a career-high in makes from three. She also hit all three of her free-throw attempts and added two steals and two assists.

Brooke Rayner scored 13 points to go with five assists and two steals. Aliyah Llanusa had 10 points to go with three rebounds and two steals.

Alayzha Knapp (eight), Aspen Williston (six), and Caley Young (five) also scored to help out. Boorer, Lexi Foreman, Tayler Factor, Ginger Reece, and Courtnee Cash all scored two points and Macy McClendon added one.

Pittsburg State shot 52.2 percent from the floor, sank 13 3-pointers, and made 17 of 23 shots from the free-throw line on Sunday.

UCO has two games left before the Christmas Break. Central Oklahoma will travel to Fort Hays State on Friday and Nebraska Kearney on Sunday before taking off a week for the NCAA dead period. UCO resumes play on New Year's Eve with an MIAA matchup against Washburn at Hamilton Field House.
