No. 6 UCO Downed By Lions

Central Oklahoma Drops First Game Of 2022-23 On Off Night In Edmond

EDMOND – No. 6 Central Oklahoma suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night at the hands of Missouri Southern, falling 56-50.

UCO is now 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos return to the floor Sunday, hosting Pittsburg State at 3:30 p.m.

"We had a tough night and couldn't get any shots to fall," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We weren't very sharp and just could make any shots. Credit to Missouri Southern."

Central Oklahoma shot 28.8 percent from the floor overall, hitting 17 of 59 total shots. The Bronchos went 2-for-20 on shots from behind the 3-point line, a 10 percent mark, and UCO was even below average at 66.7 percent from the free-throw line, making 14 of 21 shots there.

Central Oklahoma scored the first basket of the night on its first possession when Camryn Givens dropped in a little turnaround hook shot in the lane to make it, 2-0. After Missouri Southern hit a 3-pointer on the other end, the Bronchos went back in front with a Jaden Wells 3-pointer that made it 5-3 with 18:56 to play in the opening half.

Central never led again.

Missouri Southern went on a 10-2 run to take early control, and continued to hold it for the rest of the night. The Lions held their biggest lead of the game, 14 points, with 29 seconds left in the first half.

MSSU took that 36-22 lead into halftime.

Central spent almost 12 minutes in the second half whittling the lead down to six points on a Curtis Haywood steal and fastbreak layup. UCO cut it to four, 43-39, on a pair of free-throws from Preston Aymond with 6:20 to play.

But the Southern lead grew again, back to as much as nine points.

It was an eight-point game when UCO earned four free-throws on one possession. Wells was fouled going for a loose ball and was awarded two free-throws for that. But MSSU was also whistled for a deadball contact technical foul after the play was over and Wells took two more free-throws. He sank all four to pull it to within four, 54-50, with 37 seconds left in the game.

But he missed a layup on the ensuing possession and Southern found a fastbreak dunk to finish off the 56-50 upset of the Bronchos.

Wells led Central with 14 points on a night the best shooter in the MIAA went 4-for-18. He was 2-for-7 from behind the 3-point line and 4-for-4 from the stripe. Wells also had six rebounds.

Givens scored 12 points, going 5-for-13 from the floor. He was 0-for-5 from behind the 3-point line and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Givens had a team-high seven boards.

Haywood finished with eight points and five rebounds. Aymond had seven and six. Luke Haasl posted six points and joined Givens with a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.

Central Oklahoma will host Pittsburg State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. before making a road trip to Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney next weekend.
