No. 6 UCO Turns Back Pitt State

EDMOND – No. 6 Central Oklahoma bounced back from a rare off-night performance Thursday with a double-digit MIAA victory Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma 77, Pittsburg State 60.

UCO scored 50 points in the paint on Sunday after the Bronchos put up that much total on Thursday night. The big rebound put Central Oklahoma at 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play.

"We did a lot of things better today but we made some shots most importantly," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Our defense was good, we rebounded well, but the shots for the most part went in today."

UCO shot 50.8 percent from the floor, hitting 32 of 63 shots. The Bronchos were an impressive 22-for-28 (79 pct.) inside six feet.

Central Oklahoma did go just 3 of 17 from behind the 3-point line, but with 10 made free-throws, and the dominant performance on the inside, UCO got back in the win column with little pushback from Pitt State.

Jaden Wells scored the first five points of the game, putting in a finger roll layup and one of his two 3-pointers in the first two minute of the game.

Pitt State did take a 6-5 lead three minutes into the action, but a Preston Aymond jumper from the elbow gave UCO a 7-6 lead and the Bronchos never trailed again.

PSU tied it, 9-9, but a 7-0 run by the Bronchos followed. Camryn Givens dunked it in the lane, Jalyn Turner picked up a fastbreak layup after Curtis Haywood ripped off one of his five steals in the game, and then Haywood knocked down a 3-pointer for a second-chance basket that gave UCO a 16-9 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half.

UCO built an 11-point lead later in the half and took a 35-29 lead to halftime.

Pittsburg State never got it closer than that. The deficit was as little as seven points on a couple of occasions and eight points too, but the Bronchos pulled away, leading by as many as 19 points with five and a half minutes left in the game.

Givens led the Bronchos with a game-high 24 points, a mark that is also a season-high for the forward from McKinney, Texas. Givens has vaulted from 42nd to 28th on Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list, where he now stands with 1,123 career points.

Givens went 11-for-16 Sunday and also had two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Wells scored 15 for the Bronchos, hitting 5 of 11 shots including two 3-pointers. He added three free-throws and also grabbed five rebounds and one steal.

Haywood joined those two in double figures. He scored 11 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

Aymond finished with eight points, five rebounds, one assist and one block. Turner, Ben Averitt, and Mike Quick Jr. all scored four points. Danquez Dawsey had three and Luke Haasl and Tre'Veon Ellis both scored two points.

Central Oklahoma will play at Fort Hays State on Friday night before a trip to Nebraska Kearney next Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos will break for the holiday and then come back Dec. 28 to host Southwestern Christian in the final non-conference game of the year. A New Year's Eve clash with Washburn starts the 18-game stretch of MIAA contests.
