No. 7 Central Oklahoma Trounces Blue Tigers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – No. 7 Central Oklahoma never faltered in an MIAA road win Saturday at Lincoln with the Bronchos picking up a 78-63 victory over the Blue Tigers.

Central Oklahoma improved to 7-0 on the season and is now 2-0 in league play. It's the first time since 2010-11 UCO has started the season 7-0.

"We did a good job today executing the game plan," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "A lot of guys did a good job in their roles and assignments, and we played really well as a team. It's good to win on the road and it'll be good to be back home next week."

UCO and Lincoln traded leads early in the game Saturday, but a quick spurt by the Bronchos midway through the first half gave Central a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Trailing 14-7 with just under 14 minutes on the clock, Danquez Dawsey knocked down a 3-pointer that kick-started an 15-2 run. Camryn Givens laid it up to make it 14-12, then Luke Haasl tied the game, 14-14, with an alley-oop dunk. Givens knocked down another bucket to give UCO a 16-14 lead, then after a pair of Lincoln free-throws, another Haasl alley-oop made it 18-16.

Tre'Veon Ellis and Jalyn Turner both made baskets after that to extend the lead to 22-16.

UCO would lead by as many as 20 in the first half and took that margin to halftime, 46-26. The Bronchos made 51.5 percent of their shots in the first half and sank eight 3-pointers.

While Lincoln did outscore the Bronchos in the second half, UCO cruised to victory to push its winning streak to seven games.

Jaden Wells was the leading scorer for the Bronchos, putting up 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting. He hit five 3-pointers for the third time this season and the 13th time in his career. Wells added three steals and two rebounds.

Curtis Haywood filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals. He was just 3-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-6 from behind the 3-point line, but added six made free-throws.

Haasl also scored in double figures, posting 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting. He grabbed four rebounds to go with two blocks, two steals, and one assist.

Ellis made it four Bronchos in double figures with a 10-point performance. He went 5-for-8 from the floor and had four boards, four assists, and three steals.

Givens (eight), Preston Aymond (seven), Dawsey (six), and Turner (four), rounded out the scoring for UCO.

Central Oklahoma will return to Hamilton Field House next week for a pair of MIAA contests. The Bronchos opened the season with three straight wins at home before picking up the last four on the road. UCO hosts Missouri Southern Thursday night and Pittsburg State next Sunday afternoon.
