Central Oklahoma Downed At Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team came up a short at Fort Hays State Friday night, 57-48, in an MIAA matchup at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

UCO fell to 4-5 overall on the season following the setback and the Bronchos are now 1-4 in the MIAA.

"We played better tonight than we have so we have to look at that as a good sign," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "Obviously we're disappointed we didn't get the win. We were close late and we played a lot better overall than we have. So we're going in a better direction."

Central Oklahoma took a lead on the first possession of the second half, but a rally from Fort Hays State followed and UCO couldn't get over the hump after that.

Alayzha Knapp led the Bronchos with 15 points and nine rebounds. Caley Young and Karly Wadsworth both scored 10 points to help with an offense that shot 31.7 percent in the game.

UCO finished the game 19-for-60 overall and just 3-for-15 from behind the arc. Wadsworth hit two of Central's 3-pointers.

UCO struggled in the first quarter, hitting on 2 of 14 total shots. But the Bronchos weren't out of it, trailing only one at the end of the quarter. Central made 4 of 6 free-throws and trailed 10-9 at the first break.

Central Oklahoma made a run to start the second quarter. After a bucket from Fort Hays made it 12-9, UCO went on a 6-0 run that spanned three minutes to pull ahead, 15-12. Hays broke the drought with a bucket at the 6:21 mark in the second quarter, but UCO followed with four straight to go ahead, 19-14 with 4:20 to play in the half. The Bronchos had a 24-22 lead late, but a 3-0 run to end the half gave Fort Hays State a 25-24 halftime lead.

The Bronchos could not say the same for the third quarter. Fort Hays State went on a run to open the second half, following an opening bucket from UCO with a 6-0 run. That turned into a 10-4 run and Hays went on to outscore UCO in the third quarter, 14-8, to take a 39-32 lead into the final frame.

Fort Hays State inched away in the fourth. A 3-pointer cut the lead to three points, 47-44, with under six minutes to play, but the Bronchos couldn't close the gap any more than that.

Aliyah Llanusa chipped in seven points and grabbed eight rebounds to go with three assists. Aspen Williston (four) and Brooke Rayner (two) also scored for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up a short, two-game road trip Sunday afternoon with a trip to Nebraska-Kearney. That game will be the final game before the holiday break for the Bronchos and is scheduled to tipoff at 2 p.m.

The Bronchos return home on the other side of Christmas, hosting Washburn on New Year's Eve and Emporia State on Jan. 2, 2023.
