No. 11 Central Oklahoma Outlasts Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – Camryn Givens found a gear Fort Hays State couldn't keep pace with and No. 11 Central Oklahoma beat the host Tigers 66-61 in an MIAA showdown at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Givens scored a game-high 24 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. He was 9-for-15 overall, 4-for-6 from behind the 3-point line, and added three free-throws on four attempts.

But it was late performance in the second half that did it.

Trailing 46-41 with under 12 minutes to play, Givens scored 10 of the next 14 points in a flurry, including a pair of 3-pointers. He scored 15 in the second half to lead the Bronchos to a big road victory.

"Cam was great down the stretch, but so was our defense," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They're a great defensive team and our team stepped up and played great defense tonight. Curtis Haywood was great, Jalyn Turner was great, Preston Aymond was great. All of our guys played so good. I'm really proud of the team for this effort tonight. That was big."

UCO held Fort Hays State leading scorer Kaleb Hammeke scoreless for nearly 30 minutes. He finished with 11 down the stretch, but the Bronchos did a lot of damage. Central Oklahoma forced Fort Hays State to 38.1 percent shooting overall and just 15.8 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Central Oklahoma got off to a slow start in the game Friday night, calling a timeout down 9-2 with 16:21 to play. But the early energy and momentum from Hays wore off. UCO followed with an 8-2 run and cut the lead to one, 11-10, when Luke Haasl slammed home an alley-oop from Curtis Haywood.

The Bronchos put together another run, 11-4 over a 6:38 window midway through the half, and built their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes, 26-20, when a Camryn Givens layup with 2:47 capped off the rally.

Fort Hays did respond with an 8-3 run to end the half, including a dunk at the buzzer, to cut the UCO lead to a point at the break, 29-28.

Hays made its big run in the second half, taking a 42-41 lead with 12:58 to play when Hammeke hit a 3-pointer – just his second basket of the game. A Hays layup with 11:39 to play gave the Tigers a 46-41 lead and capped an 11-1 run by FHSU.

Then it was Givens time to takeover.

Fort Hays last lead of the game was 51-49, with 8:30 to play in the game. Haywood tied it with a jump shot at that mark, then Givens hit his second 3-pointer in as many minutes to give the Bronchos a 54-51 lead that UCO never relinquished.

Givens equaled a season-high with 24 points for the second game in a row.

Haywood also filled up the stat sheet. He scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds, joining Givens with a team-high on the boards. Haywood also had two assists and two steals. Jaden Wells finished with 13 points and three assists. He hit two 3-pointers and added three free-throws.

Aymond, who scored four points on 2 of 5 shooting, had a career-high five blocked shots, including one with 20 seconds left that sealed the victory for the Bronchos.

Turner, Haasl and Tre'Veon Ellis all added three points while Mike Quick Jr. scored one.

Central Oklahoma finished the game shooting 51.1 percent from the floor overall. The Bronchos went 23-for-45 from the field, 9-for-21 from behind the arc and 11-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma wraps up its two-game road trip Sunday at Nebraska-Kearney in what will be the final game before the holiday break for the Bronchos and is scheduled to tipoff at 4 p.m.

The Bronchos return home on the other side of Christmas, hosting Southwestern Christian on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. UCO will return to MIAA play and host Washburn on New Year's Eve and Emporia State on Jan. 2, 2023.
