No. 7 UCO Opens MIAA Play With Victory

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – No. 7 Central Oklahoma used an early second-half run to gain control on its way to a 64-58 win at Central Missouri in the 2022-23 MIAA opener.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 6-0 on the season with win and is now 1-0 in league play.
 
"We did a good job of refocusing at halftime and playing a better game in the second half," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We got to the line, which helped, and we played better defense too. Central Missouri is a good team and this was a good win to open conference play."
 
Jaden Wells led Central Oklahoma with 22 points and Curtis Haywood added 10 as every Broncho that played scored. UCO shot 41.1 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers on 22 attempts. The Bronchos also added 12 free-throws.
 
UCO got off to a slow start and trailed for most of the first half. UCM led by as much as nine points in the first 20 minutes and led for 17 of those.
 
Central Oklahoma trailed 26-24 at halftime, and after a basket to start the second half from Central Missouri, trailed by four. But then a 5-0 run gave UCO the lead.
 
UCM took it back, 31-29, but a Wells 3-pointer with 13:58 to go gave the Bronchos a 32-31 lead and Central Oklahoma never trailed again.
 
The Bronchos built its biggest lead, 10 points, late in the second half as UCO found a gutsy road win to open league play.
 
Wells finished with 22 points, going 6-for-13 from the floor. He was 3-for-8 from behind the 3-point line and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wells also had four rebounds and one blocked shot.
 
Haywood finished with 10 points on 3 of 7 shooting, including one 3-pointer. He made three shots from the free-throw line and added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
 
Luke Haasl and Tre'Veon Ellis both scored seven points off the bench. Jalyn Turner and Ben Averitt added four points each. Preston Aymond and Danquez Dawsey scored three apiece, and Camryn Givens and Mike Quick both scored two.
 
Central Oklahoma has one more stop left on its brief MIAA opening weekend road trip. UCO visits Lincoln in Jefferson City, Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
