Central Oklahoma Pulled Away From Cal-State San Bernardino In Early Season Top 10 Showdown

HONOLULU – No. 8 Central Oklahoma had the last say in a knockdown, drag out fight with No. 7 Cal-State San Bernardino Saturday night in the final game of the Hoops in Hawaii Classic.

Callen Haydon scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Bronchos and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
 
He led UCO to the win with a huge performance down the stretch, and had help from some other big performances.
 
Camryn Givens (18), Jaden Wells (15), and Curtis Haywood (13) all had big games too to lead the Bronchos.
 
"Everyone really gave their all in this one and I'm really proud of the whole team because this was truly a team effort," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "It took all of us and took a lot of determination and I'm proud of them for this one."
 
Central Oklahoma and Cal-State San Bernardino went back and forth all night long at Hawaii Pacific's Shark Tank. The game saw 17 lead changes and it was tied nine times.
 
The last change came when Haydon made a layup to give Central Oklahoma a 68-66 lead with 6:35 to play in the game.
 
The Bronchos didn't trail again.
 
Haydon sank two free-throws with 1:13 to play in the game to give the Bronchos an 81-71 lead, capping off a rousing 15-5 run.
 
Haydon scored eight points down the stretch after giving UCO the lead for good.
 
He finished the game 9 of 17 shooting and 9 of 11 from the free-throw line. He also had four steals, two assists and one rebound.
 
Givens went 7-for-15 from the floor, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers. He added one free-throw. Givens' 3-pointer with 1:38 to play gave UCO a 77-71 lead and was a proverbial dagger that slayed the Coyotes from San Bernardino.
 
Givens also had three rebounds in the game.
 
Wells was big with 16 points, going 4-for-12 from the field. He hit two 3-pointers and made all six of his free-throw attempts. Wells added four steals too and had four rebounds.
 
Haywood scored 13 and added a game-high 11 rebounds. He went 4-for-10 from the floor and made all five of his free-throw attempts.
 
Haywood's fastbreak slam with 35 seconds left gave UCO an 85-75 lead to polish off the victory.
 
UCO also got nine points from Luke Haasl off the bench. He added three boards and two steals. Preston Aymond (two), Mike Quick Jr. (one) and Danquez Dawsey (one) also scored for the Bronchos.
 
UCO finished the game 28-for-64 overall, hitting 43.8 percent of its shots. The Bronchos were 5-for-15 from behind the arc and 26-for-35 from the free-throw line.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 5-0 on the season with the win. The Bronchos will travel back to the mainland Sunday night before opening MIAA play next week with games at Central Missouri Thursday and at Lincoln next Saturday.
