UCO Falls To Crimson Storm

EDMOND (Nov. 26) – First-half shooting woes put Central Oklahoma in a hole it couldn't dig out of as the Bronchos fell to Southern Nazarene 85-64 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO made just 10-of-37 shots (27.0 percent) in the opening 20 minutes to fall behind by 20 (41-21), then  battling back to within10 in the third quarter before the Crimson Storm pulled away again.

It was the first loss of the season after a 3-0 start for the Bronchos.

"We got off to a terrible start and just couldn't overcome that," head coach Emma Andrews said. "SNU has a good team and their defense caused us problems, but we still missed a lot of shots we normally make.

"We just have to put it behind us and get back to work."

The Bronchos ended up shooting 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field, including just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from 3-point range. SNU also finished with a big 51-29 rebounding advantage.

Aliyah Llanusa led UCO with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brooke Rayner and Karly Wadsworth added 10 points apiece.

Kassie Boorer chipped in nine points, five rebounds and two steals, while Aspen Williston contributed seven points and two blocks.

The Bronchos missed 19 layups in the game, including eight in the first quarter in falling behind quickly.

UCO led 2-0 on a short Wadsworth jumper and 4-3 after Rayner's follow shot following a missed layup, but the Crimson Storm reeled off 10 unanswered points to take the lead for good at 13-4.

The deficit grew to 13 (21-8) by the end of the quarter and 20 (41-21) by intermission.

The Bronchos briefly got back in the game in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run to pull within 10.

Boorer started that spurt with a pair of free throws, Llanusa made a driving layup after a steal and added two foul shots a minute later. Williston's layup following a Boorer steal made it 50-40 with 2:37 left in the quarter.

But the Crimson Storm answered with seven straight points to push its lead back to 17 at 57-40 and UCO go no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Cassandra Awatt had 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead SNU.

It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Bronchos, who open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play next week with road games against Central Missouri and Lincoln.
