No. 8 UCO Tames Mountain Lions

HONOLULU – No. 8 Central Oklahoma used a big first-half run to kickstart its demolition of UC-Colorado Springs Friday night.

Bronchos 83, UC-Colorado Springs 40.

"We played really well in the first half to get momentum and the guys did a great job of keeping it going from there," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "I'm proud of the guys for staying focused and getting the win."

UCO trailed Colorado Springs in the first half before two Callen Haydon free-throws gave the Bronchos an 18-17 lead with 9:14 to play. That started an 8-0 run by the Bronchos that included six points from Haydon. Colorado Springs finally got another bucket to make it 24-19, but then the Bronchos ended the first half with a big 10-0 run with points from five different UCO squad members.

Haydon ended the night as the Bronchos leading scorer, putting up 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting. He hit one 3-pointer and all four of his free-throw attempts. Haydon, who is No. 6 on Central's all-time assist chart, had one dish Friday night.

Jaden Wells also scored 15 points for UCO, hitting 6 of 14 shots, one 3-pointer, and both of his free-throw attempts. Wells also had four assists.

Camryn Givens added 14 for the Bronchos. He went 4-for-8 overall, hit one 3-pointer, and was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Givens added a team-high six rebounds.

Luke Haasl led a big bench effort for the Bronchos, scoring 10 points in reserve action. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including two big slam dunks. Haasl added three boards and a steal. UCO's bench outscored Colorado Springs 31-18.

Central Oklahoma benefitted from a stifling defense Friday night. UC-Colorado Springs averaged 93 points per game through its first five contests of the season, but could only muster 40 on Friday. The Mountain Lions were held to 25.5 percent shooting overall, hitting just 13 field goals all night. UCCS shot 6.3 percent from behind the arc, going 2-for-32.

A big part of that defense was UCO forcing turnovers. The Bronchos flipped possession 26 times and half of those came off 13 steals. Central Oklahoma scored 33 points off turnovers in the game.

UCO got a well-rounded scoring effort with every Broncho playing.

Tre'Veon Ellis scored nine points off the bench. Curtis Haywood and Mike Quick Jr. both scored seven. Danquez Dawsey and Austin Fenton both scored two, and Preston Aymond and Gunner Korstjens both added one point.

Central Oklahoma has one more game on the schedule for its tour of the Aloha State. The Bronchos take on No. 7 Cal-State San Bernardino Saturday at 7 p.m. in Honolulu. That tipoff is 11 p.m. Oklahoma time.
