Llanusa Leads UCO Over Aggies

EDMOND (Nov. 22) – Aliyah Llanusa's fantastic all-around performance and a fast start propelled Central Oklahoma to a 72-65 triumph over intrastate rival Cameron Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

Llanusa had career highs for points (19) and rebounds (11) while adding four steals and three assists. The Bronchos bolted to a 20-4 lead and were up 18 going into the final quarter before surviving some shaky moments down the stretch in improving to 3-0 on the young season.

"We've got to do a better job finishing the game," said first-year head coach Emma Andrews, who took over the Central helm last May after a six-year tenure as head coach of the Aggies. "We played really well on both ends of the floor in the first half, but struggled to get anything going in the second half and let them back in the game.

"But we didn't panic and came out with a good win. Aliyah played lights out and I like the balance we had offensively."

Four players scored in double figures for the Bronchos, who earned their 17th straight win over Cameron.

Llanusa was 6-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line in her 19-point outing. Alayzha Knapp and Brooke Rayner had 14 points apiece and Karly Wadsworth added 13 along with four assists and two steals.

UCO appeared to have the game in hand after opening up a 21-point lead (64-43) on Rayner's layup with 8:31 left to play, but the Bronchos missed nine straight shots and committed three turnovers to fuel a CU comeback.

The Aggies used a 15-1 run to cut the lead to seven at 65-58 with 2:29 remaining. Wadsworth drained a long-distance 3-pointer and Knapp hit one of two free throws to push the lead back to 11 (69-58) at the 2:10 mark to seemingly seal the game, though Cameron answered with six straight points to make it 70-65 with 1:28 left.

UCO then missed a layup on the other end, but the Aggies threw the ball away and Llanusa was fouled with 22 seconds remaining. The junior guard swished both foul shots to arrange the final margin.

The Bronchos never trailed in the contest, jumping on top 6-0 on consecutive layups by Knapp, Rayner and Wadsworth.  Two treys by Wadsworth and another by Ginger Reece helped push the lead to 20-4 seven minutes into the contest and UCO was up 22-9 after the end of one.

Knapp scored seven second-quarter points to help the Bronchos take a 44-23 lead into intermission and UCO was still in control with a 59-41 advantage after three quarters before the shaky finish.

The Bronchos limited Cameron to 33.9-percent shooting (20-of-59) from the field and forced 18 turnovers.

UCO wraps up its season-opening four-game homestand Saturday, hosting Southern Nazarene at 1:30 p.m.
