Knapp, Rayner Spark UCO Past Eagles

EDMOND (Nov. 19) – Alayzha Knapp and Brooke Rayner scored 24 points apiece to power Central Oklahoma past Oklahoma Christian 78-64 Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos of first-year head coach Emma Andrews overcame a rough start and 29 turnovers to post their second lopsided win in as many nights in the season-opening UCO Classic.

"I think offensively the kids are starting to jell a little bit, though we've got to do a better job protecting the ball," Andrews said. "For the second game of the season I was proud of how we played. We've got a lot of work to do, but it was a good opening weekend for us."

The Bronchos trailed by seven (11-4) three minutes into the game before rallying to take a 22-18 lead after the first quarter. UCO stretched that to a 14-point advantage (38-24) by halftime and led by as many as 30 in the third quarter before coasting in for its sixth straight win over the Eagles.

Knapp and Rayner were the catalysts.

Knapp was 10-of-17 from the field with one 3-pointer and 3-of-5 from the free throw line in her 24-point outing while also blocking four shots and making two steals.

Rayner made 8-of-15 shots, including 4-of-6 from long range, and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The senior guard added three assists and a steal.

Karly Wadsworth also made it into double figures with 12 points, while Ginger Reece had nine points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench. Aspen Williston also came up big in a relief role, chipping in seven rebounds and four blocks.

UCO was efficient offensively, shooting 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field while making 7-of-18 3-pointers (38.9 percent). The Bronchos held OC to 30.9-percent shooting (21-of-68) and harassed OC into a 0-of-16 night from beyond the arc.

The game didn't start off like it would be a UCO rout as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead just three minutes into the contest. But the Bronchos didn't panic and slowly chipped away at the deficit, pulling even at 16-all with 2:13 left in the quarter.

Reece made two foul shots at 1:47 to break that deadlock and put Central ahead to stay, with two Lexi Foreman free throws giving the Bronchos a 22-18 lead by the end of the first 10 minutes.

UCO pulled away at the end of the second quarter, with Rayner scoring six unanswered points in the final 2:07 to give the Bronchos a comfortable 38-24 halftime cushion.

Rayner drained three treys, Knapp made a trio of inside buckets and Wadsworth scored five points as UCO opened the second half with a 20-4 run to put the Eagles in a 30-point hole (58-28) and end any suspense.

A flurry of fourth-quarter turnovers allowed OC to get within the final 14-point margin, but the outcome was never in doubt.

The Bronchos continue their season-opening four-game homestand Tuesday, hosting intrastate rival Cameron for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
