Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Brannick

Bronchos Win Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma ushered in a new era of Broncho basketball Friday with a 99-84 victory over Missouri S&T at Hamilton Field House.

First-year head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews was hired in May to take over the program, and after a one-week delay to start the year, the Bronchos were off and running on Friday night.

"It was good to finally get out there for real and the girls did a good job," Andrews said. "There are definitely some things that we need to work on. This was by no means perfect, but the girls did a good job tonight. We played well and we got the win."

There were four ties and four lead changes but all came in the first four minutes of the game. Once Alayzha Knapp hit a pair of free-throws to give UCO a 12-11 lead, the Bronchos ran away with things.

UCO built an 11-point lead and put up 30 first-quarter points. Knapp was good from the start, hitting a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game before scoring eight points in the first quarter.

Central Oklahoma ballooned that lead to 21 points in the second quarter when Karly Wadsworth knocked down a 3-pointer to give UCO a 52-31 lead.

Knapp had 14 by the half and Central led 52-35.

Missouri S&T made a push in the third quarter but could only get as close as 11 points before the Bronchos put it away for good. Central had its biggest lead of the game, 23 points, with 3:51 to play.

Knapp led the Bronchos on Friday night, scoring 22 points on 9 of 16 shooting. She hit both of her 3-point attempts and both of her free-throw attempts. Knapp added four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Brooke Rayner was also huge for the Bronchos. The fifth-year senior scored 22 points to tie Knapp for the team-high. Rayner was 8-for-13 shooting, 2-for-4 on 3-pointers, and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. She also added eight assists, six rebounds and one steal.

Wadsworth, River Romine, and Tayler Factor all scored nine points. Wadsworth hit one 3-pointer and had two steals. Romine got nine all on three made 3-pointers. And Factor, who missed all of last year with an injury, was solid with nine points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Ginger Reece added eight points, Kassie Boorer scored seven, and Lexi Foreman added six points and four rebounds. Aliyah Llanusa had five points and joined Factor with a team-high seven rebounds. Caley Young also scored two points.

Central Oklahoma finished the game shooting 51.5 percent from the floor, going 35-for-68 overall. UCO shot 47.6 percent from behind the arc, hitting 10 of 21 shots, and the Bronchos were 19-for-26 from the free-throw line, a 73.1 percent mark.

The Bronchos are hosting the 2022 UCO Classic at Hamilton Field House and will play Oklahoma Christian Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Newman beat OC on Friday before the Central Oklahoma game and will also play Missouri S&T Saturday in front of the Broncho clash with the Eagles of Oklahoma City.
