No. 11 Bronchos Cruise In Opener

EDMOND (Nov. 13) – Camryn Givens' hot start put Central Oklahoma in control quickly and the No. 11-ranked Bronchos went on to a 97-59 drubbing of Paul Quinn Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Givens outscored the Tigers 10-2 in the first 2:17 of the game and the outcome was never in doubt. UCO led 51-26 at halftime before coasted in the final 20 minutes to get the 2022-23 season off to a rousing start.

"It was a good start for us," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "I was pretty happy with everything and thought we played pretty well overall. Our offense was efficient and the defense was solid."

The Bronchos were scheduled to open the season in Bismark, N.D. with games Friday and Saturday at the Central Region Challenge, but that event was canceled on Thursday. UCO scrambled to find an opponent and was able to get Paul Quinn as a last-minute addition.

"It wasn't the weekend we thought it going to be," Hoffman said. "But any opportunity you get to play you've got to dive in and do as good as you can. I thought we did that today and it was a great way to start the season."

The Bronchos shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the field, including a solid 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from 3-point range. UCO limited the Tigers to 33.3-percent shooting (23-of-69), forced 19 turnovers and also blocked six shots.

Jaden Wells ended up at Central's leading scorer, leading four players in double figures with 22 points. The sophomore sharpshooter was 7-of-12 from the field with three treys and – as the reigning NCAA Division II free throw champion – hit all five of his free throw attempts.

Curtis Haywood made 7-of-10 shots in an 18-point, nine-rebound outing, while Givens finished with 12 points and eight boards. Mike Quick Jr. scored 10 points off the bench in the final nine minutes of the contest.

Givens was the spark early. The senior standout hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key 30 seconds into the game, followed a Paul Quinn bucket with two free throws and then hit a 12-footer after UCO forced a turnover.

Givens capped his opening burst with a 3-pointer from the corner that made it 10-2 just 2:17 into the game and the Tigers never got any closer.

Wells had a scoring spurt of his own midway through the half, pouring through 13 points in a two-minute span.

He started that surge with eight straight points, draining a long trey from the wing, a pair of foul shots and then a conventional three-point play as a 23-9 lead grew to a 31-11 cushion.

Wells had another 3-pointer and two more free throws while Haywood also drilled a long trey to make it 39-11 with 9:10 left in the half.

UCO's first-half lead peaked at 31 (44-13) on a Callen Haydon 3-pointer before the Bronchos settled for the 25-point halftime advantage and the second half was academic.

Central has two more home games this week, hosting Barclay (Kan.) Tuesday and Kansas Christian Thursday. Tip-off both nights is 7 p.m.
