No. 21 Bronchos Sweep Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 21 Central Oklahoma swept Newman 3-0 Tuesday night and swept the season series against the Jets.

The Bronchos improved to 24-5 on the year with the win and UCO is now 14-5 in MIAA play heading into its final regular season match Wednesday night at No. 10 Northwest Missouri.

"It's a good way to start the road trip, getting the win," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "Newman is a good team and they pushed us late, but we found a way and we got it done. We need to stay focused for tomorrow's match."

Central Oklahoma hit .219 for the match Tuesday with 18 kills in each of the three sets. The Bronchos were led by Jenna Karp, who had 14 kills on a .520 hitting percentage. She also added two blocks.

Mallorie Koehn, who is from Wichita, and Lari Migliorino, both had nine kills in the match. Maegan Lacy added seven and Brynn Egger and Sydney Huck each had five.

Migliorino and Lacy also had two blocks each.

The defense was a well-rounded effort for the Bronchos. Jaedynn Evans got 15 digs to lead the way, Lindsey Houran added 12 and Katie Le and Huck both had 10 digs.

Houran paced the Central offense with 48 assists.

UCO conceded the first point of the match on an Egger attack error, but Koehn tied it, 1-1, with her first kill of the night. After Migliorino gave Central a 2-1 lead, the Bronchos didn't trail again. UCO hit .256 in the first set and cruised to a 25-18 win.

In the second set, a Migliorino attack error tied the match, 2-2, but she landed a kill to put Central ahead 3-2 and again, UCO never looked back. The Bronchos hit .268 in the second frame and posted a 25-20 victory to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Newman put up a fight in the third set. The Jets took an early 4-0 lead and led until Migliorino's kill tied it, 11-11. Newman followed that with a 8-2 run to build a comfortable 19-13 lead, but then UCO turned the tide.

Lacy's kill sparked a 4-0 run and UCO fought back to at tie, 22-22, on a kill from Koehn.

Newman took its last lead on an attack error by Huck, but the 24-23 lead was brief.

Huck had the next two points with back-to-back kills and Lacy finished the match off with her seventh kill of the night to give Central the 26-24 set win and the match.

Central Oklahoma faces a stout Northwest Missouri squad that needs two wins this week to clinch its first-ever MIAA title. The Bronchos look to play spoiler while competing for position in next week's MIAA Volleyball Championship.
