Bronchos Upend No. 10 Northwest Missouri

EDMOND (Oct. 7) – Youthful Central Oklahoma continued its surprising resurgence with a stunning sweep of No. 10-ranked Northwest Missouri Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

Underclassmen accounted for all 55 kills as the No. 24 Bronchos toppled the Bearcats 25-21, 27-25, 25-18 in earning their third upset over a top-20 team this season. UCO, which beat No. 6 Washburn and No. 18 Central Missouri in September, improved to 19-2 overall and 9-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"We played really well tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Northwest has a great team so we knew it would take our best effort to beat them. This team is hungry and they're working really hard to get better every day."

The Bronchos hit a season-high .369, collecting their 55 kills in 130 attacks with a mere seven errors. NWMSU hit .301, but it wasn't enough to keep up.

Freshman Sydney Huck tallied a match-high 16 kills to lead UCO, while sophomore Mallorie Koehn had 15. Sophomore Jenna Karp hit a sizzling .533 with nine kills and one error in 15 attempts to go along with four blocks.

Sophomore Brynn Egger also had nine kills, with freshmen Lindsey Houran (four) and Lari Migliorino (two) rounding out the offensive attack. Houran also had 47 assists, 11 digs and two aces, while Jaedynn Evans collected 17 digs.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set, though it was close most of the way. A Koehn kill and Houran ace gave UCO a quick 2-0 lead and it was a 9-4 advantage after Houran's dump at the net fell in for a kill.

The Bearcats pulled within one several times the rest of the way, but could never take the lead. Koehn sandwiched a kill and ace around a NWMSU attack error to made it 23-19 and Egger's shot down the line gave UCO the 25-21 victory.

There were 10 ties and six lead changes in the crucial second set. The Bronchos appeared in control after taking a 22-18 lead, but NWMSU used a 5-1 run to pull even at 23-all and the Bearcats eventually went in front 25-24.

UCO stayed alive when Koehn rifled a shot down the middle, Egger put the Bronchos ahead with a deep ball and an NWMSU attack error ended it.

It was all UCO in the third set. Huck had seven kills in 11 tries and Karp knocked down all five of her shot attempts as the Bronchos zipped to a 13-5 lead before coasting in to finish off the sweep.
