UCO Upset Bid Falls Short Against Lopers

EDMOND (Oct. 14) – Central Oklahoma's spirited, come-from-behind upset bid fell short Friday night at Hamilton Field House as the No. 19-ranked Bronchos dropped a thrilling five-set decision to No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney.

The Lopers rolled to 25-19, 25-18 wins in the first two sets to seemingly take control of the match, but UCO rallied with 25-20, 25-22 victories to force a fifth set. UNK broke away from a tie midway through the deciding set to prevail 15-11 in the key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown.

The Bronchos fell to 19-3 overall and 9-3 in the league, while UNK improved to 21-2 and 11-2. UCO wraps up a four-match homestand Saturday with a 6 p.m. meeting against Fort Hays State.

"We got off to a slow start and they really had us on the ropes, but our girls kept battling," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We fought hard to give ourselves a chance and just came up a little short. It's a tough loss that we have to put behind us so we can focus on tomorrow's match."

Central finished with more kills (72-63), but the Lopers hit a torrid .340 for the match and that was too much to overcome.

Sydney Huck led the Bronchos with 21 kills and 11 digs, while Mallorie Koehn had 17 kills. Lari Migliorino was virtually unstoppable in the middle, hitting .733 with 11 kills and no errors in 15 attacks.

Brynn Egger also had 11 kills and Jenna Karp hit .320 with 10 in addition to making six blocks. Lindsey Houran passed out 63 assists and added three service aces, while Jaedynn Evans made 28 digs.

UNK had seven aces in its first-set win and used an early 6-0 run to take control in the second set to quickly put the Bronchos on the ropes.

But UCO responded.

Koehn and Egger had kills while Huck made a solo block to key a 4-0 spurt that broke a 2-2 tie early in the third set and the Bronchos never trailed again. It was an 8-7 lead when Huck knocked down three kills and Karp slammed one down at the net to push the advantage to 12-7.

UNK stayed close and was within one again at 20-19, but kills by Karp and Koehn made it 22-19 and UCO went on to close out the set.

The Bronchos trailed throughout the early going in the fourth set and were down 12-10 before surging in front with five unanswered points. Houran and Karp started that run with a combined block, Koehn had back-to-back kills and Huck served up an ace before Houran and Karp teamed up for another block to make it 15-12.

UCO's lead reached 24-17 on consecutive aces by Katie Le and the Bronchos held on to force the fifth set.

There were seven ties and five lead changes in the deciding set. UCO's last lead was a 7-6 on a Migliorino kill, but the Lopers scored five straight points to move ahead 11-7 and the Bronchos couldn't answer.
