No. 21 Central Oklahoma Blanks Missouri Western

EDMOND – No. 21 Central Oklahoma opened the final weekend of home matches with a 1-0 win against Missouri Western Friday night at Tom Thompson Field.

UCO improved to 9-1-3 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 4-1-1 in the MIAA.

"We thought the early goal was big in setting the tone," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "But we also think we could have done more. We need to continue to learn and get better. Getting the win is always great though and a good start to the weekend."

Central Oklahoma plays Northwest Missouri Sunday at 1 p.m. The Broncho seniors, Eden Jones and Monika McGee, and Avery Holland and Amaya Grace, will be recognized prior to kickoff.

Grace got Central on the scoreboard Friday night and her sixth-minute goal against Missouri Western was all the Bronchos needed.

Harmony Turner took a few dribbles from her left back position near midfield and she delivered a perfect through pass behind the Missouri Western defense. Grace had 1 v. 1 with the keeper and never hesitated before burying the score.

Central Oklahoma took eight shots in the first half and put three shots on goal, but the Bronchos relied on a standout defensive performance to maintain its 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half was the same. UCO took eight more shots and put five on goal but still leaned on its tough defense.

Missouri Western took 19 shots in the game Friday night, putting 3 of 9 on goal in the first half and 5 of 10 in the second half.

Caroline Faulkner played the full 90 for UCO and was brilliant, making eight saves to get the shutout victory. The third-year sophomore from Tulsa set a career-high with that mark.

Eight shots on goal are also the most Central Oklahoma has faced this season.

UCO kicks off against Northwest Missouri Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos are scheduled to play four road games to wrap up the regular season. Central travels to Washburn and Emporia State next week before visiting Rogers State and Newman in two weeks.

The 2022 MIAA postseason tournament is scheduled to begin the last weekend in November. UCO is tied for second in the league standings following Friday night's win.
