Bronchos Ground Jets

EDMOND (Oct. 4) – Mallorie Koehn had 12 kills to lead a balanced attack and Central Oklahoma celebrated its return to the national rankings with a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Newman Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos – ranked for the first time since 2019 after coming in 24th in the weekly American Volleyball Coaches Association poll earlier Tuesday – got past the pesky Jets 25-20, 25-21, 31-29 for their seventh sweep of the season.

UCO improved to 18-2 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Bronchos are back in action Friday with a 6 p.m. showdown against No. 10 Northwest Missouri.

"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it and move on," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We won't be able to play like that Friday or we'll get run out of the gym, so there's a lot of things we need to work on before then."

Koehn's 12 kills led the way for UCO, while Sydney Huck had 10 and Lari Migliorino nine. Jenna Karp chipped in six kills, with Maegan Lacy and Hannah Barry adding five each.

Lindsey Houran finished with 50 assists and Jaedynn Evans dug up 29 Newman attacks, with 26 of those coming in the final two sets. Josie Thomas added 11 digs.

The first set was nip-and-tuck early before UCO used a 4-0 run to surge ahead 13-10, getting a Koehn ace and combined block by Migliorino and Lacy in that spurt. Huck, Karp and Koehn had two kills apiece the rest of the way to keep the Bronchos in front.

Central used another 4-0 run to overcome a 12-9 deficit in the second set, getting two kills from Huck and another from Barry in going ahead 13-12. The Jets tied it at 13, but Migliorino and Huck teamed up for a block to put the Bronchos ahead to stay in taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

UCO led by as many as six in the third set before Newman rallied to tie at 18-all. Brynn Egger's kill put the Bronchos back on top and a Koehn shot down the middle had the lead at 24-20.

But the Jets wouldn't go away. Newman reeled off five unanswered points to take a 26-25 lead and had four chances to force a fifth set only to see UCO hold on.

Newman led 29-28, then committed an attack error to tie it. The Bronchos didn't let this chance slip away, going ahead on a block by Koehn and Karp before Koehn ended the drama with her 12th kill of the night.
