Central Oklahoma Tripped At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma lost 37-9 at Washburn Saturday afternoon in an MIAA contest at Yager Stadium.

UCO is now 5-3 on the season following the loss.

"We got off to a good start but we didn't take advantage of our opportunities," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "After that, they jumped on us and we didn't respond. We've got to put this one behind us, learn from it, and move on."

UCO drove down the field twice in the first quarter with little resistence from Washburn. On the first drive of the game for the Bronchos, UCO made it down to the Washburn 16-yard line before a failed fourth and one attempt. UCO got the ball back and went right back down the field on its next drive, but again stalled out. This time the Bronchos missed a 32-yard field goal attempt.

Washburn finally got on the board in the second quarter, converting a 26-yard field goal with 6:47 to play till halftime. UCO's offense was solid in the first quarter despite not scoring, but in the second quarter, the Bronchos struggled to move the ball. Washburn responded with a late touchdown to take a 9-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bronchos came out with the ball but punted after just a 54-second three & out. Washburn followed that with a 5-play, 57-yard scoring drive to take a 16-0 lead with 12:31 to play in the third quarter.

Washburn scored again to take a 23-0 lead with 11:12 to play in the third quarter. The next three possessions both teams alternated interceptions and the game went to the fourth quarter 23-0.

Central Oklahoma drove down the field to end the third quarter and to begin the fourth before settling for a 41-yard field goal that Nicky Quevedo put through the uprights to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard.

Washburn added a 16-yard touchdown with 10:14 to play, and a 78-yard punt return touchdown with 6:06 to play, to extend the lead to 37-3.

UCO added its only touchdown of the game on a 10-yard pass from Peyton Thompson to Diego Richards on fourth & 6 with 37 seconds left in the game. A failed two-point try left the game the final, 37-9.

Central Oklahoma finished the game with 68 yards rushing and 184 yards passing for a total of 252 yards.

Stephon Brown went 20-for-31 passing for 150 yards. Thompson was 8-for-14 for 34 yards and the one touchdown.

Jayce Gardner led the UCO rushing attack, totaling 43 yards on three carries, all coming on the final touchdown scoring drive for the Bronchos. Daunte McGee (6-53) led the passing attack for the Bronchos.

Defensively, Connor Johnson led the Bronchos with nine tackles and one interception. Dylan Buchheit added seven stops. Johnathan Mosley also had an interception and Michael Slater added one sack.

Central Oklahoma returns home next week to take on No. 5 Pittsburg State. The Bronchos are hosting the Gorillas for Homecoming, which kicks off at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Chad Richison Stadium.
