UCO Downed By Pitt State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never recovered in a 38-7 Homecoming defeat against Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon at Chad Richison Stadium.

The Bronchos fell to 5-4 with the loss.

"Pittsburg State is a really good football team and once you get behind, it just becomes that much harder," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "We made too many mistakes early and it's hard to dig out of those kinds of holes against good teams."

Central Oklahoma kicked off to open the game and the Broncho defense forced a three & out. But UCO punted it back after a short, 5-play, 17-yard drive and Pittsburg followed with a big, 7-play, 80-yard scoring drive that started what became a long afternoon for the Bronchos.

UCO punted on its first two possessions before turning it over on downs on the third try. Central fumbled the ball away on the fourth possession and then punted twice more.

The Bronchos had a promising drive – 11 plays, 73 yards – end with no points after a run for no gain on the Pitt State 2-yard line with no timeouts and less than 10 seconds left ended the first half.

Pitt scored its first touchdown in the first quarter, then put two more scores and field goal through in the second quarter for a 24-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Central punted on its first three possessions and threw an interception on the fourth, which was returned for a touchdown. UCO punted one more time in the fourth before finally scoring its only touchdown with 1:28 to play in the game.

Jaylen Cottrell's 2-yard touchdown run capped an 8-play, 69-yard scoring drive to prevent the shutout.

UCO totaled 246 yards of offense on Saturday, putting up 95 rushing yards and 151 passing yards. The Broncho defense gave up 361 total yards, with 198 coming on the ground and 163 through the air.

Dylan Buchheit led Central's defense with nine tackles, including one for a 7-yard loss. Blake Barron added six tackles, and Chase Faber, Johnathan Mosley and Juluis Coates all had five stops. Emmonte Davis, who had one tackle also had one interception in the game.

Cottrell led the Central rushing attack, totaling 54 yards on nine carries, including a long rush of 25 yards. He added the one score.

Stephon Brown, who went 15-for-24 passing with 88 yards and one interception, ran the ball 12 times for 30 yards.

Oscar Hammond and Cottrell had a team-high five catches each. Hammond totaled 50 yards receiving and Cottrell had seven.

Jacob Delso, who made four catches, had 50 yards receiving as well.

Central Oklahoma is 5-4 and on a two-game losing streak following Saturday's Homecoming affair. The Bronchos have two weeks left in the 2022 regular season, with a trip to Nebraska Kearney on tap for next Saturday. UCO closes the year out at home against Central Missouri Nov. 12.
