Late Rally Lifts Bronchos Past Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 21) – Mallorie Koehn had five kills down the stretch to spark an improbable comeback that catapulted No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma to a thrilling five-set upset of No. 12 Washburn Friday night.

The Bronchos overcame a 9-3 deficit in the final set to pull out a 15-12 victory to finally prevail in the nearly three-hour Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association slugfest. The Ichabods claimed 26-24 25-23 wins in the first and third sets, with UCO winning 25-22, 33-31 in the second and fourth to set up the fifth-set showdown.

Central improved to 21-4 on the season and 11-4 in conference play while dropping Washburn to 18-5 and 10-5. The Bronchos move on to Emporia, Kan. Saturday for a 3 p.m. meeting with Emporia State.

"That was a great college volleyball match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Both teams really laid it on the line and it obviously could have gone either way. It looked like we were out of it in the fifth set, but our girls dug deep and just wouldn't be denied."

The Ichabods did indeed look to be in control after seizing a 9-3 lead in the decisive set, but UCO wouldn't give in.

Jenna Karp started the comeback with a pair of kills, then teamed with Koehn for a block that made it 9-6. WU scored the next two points to go up 11-6 before giving the Bronchos a point with an attack error.

Koehn then took over, knocking down three kills to go along with a pair of WU miscues to give UCO a 12-11 lead. The Ichabods tied it at 12-all, but that just temporarily delayed the rally.

Koehn's dump at the net made it 13-12, Lari Migliorino and Brynn Egger followed with a combined block and Koehn's rocket shot off a defender ended the dramatic comeback.

Karp led the Bronchos, hitting .333 with a career-high 20 kills and five blocks. Egger finished with 19 kills, Migliorino had 16 along with five blocks and Koehn ended with 15 kills.

UCO also got 30 digs, nine kills and five blocks from Sydney Huck, while Lindsey Houran made 66 assists and 19 digs. Jaedynn Evans (36 digs), Josie Thomas (19) and Katie Le (16) all played key defensive roles in the back row.

The Bronchos led 20-12 in the first set before WU roared back to take the 28-26 win. UCO led throughout the second set and was up 22-17 when the Ichabods again rallied.

Washburn got within 23-22, but Karp slammed the door with a hard-hit shot down the middle and a solo block to close out the set.

The Ichabods scored the final five points to take the third set and grab the lead, with Central coming back to win an epic back-and-forth battle in the fourth.

Huck's shot down the line broke a 23-23 tie and gave the Bronchos a chance to serve for the win, but WU stayed alive. Huck and Karp teamed up for a block to make it 25-24 and again the Ichabods tied it.

The same thing happened after a Karp kill made it 26-25 and then it was Washburn's turn. The Ichabods served for the set – and the match – while leading 27-26, 28-27, 29-28, 30-29 and 31-30 and UCO answered every time.

WU finally blinked. An attack error tied it at 31-all to give the Bronchos the serve, Egger followed with an ace and then Huck and Karp combined for a set-winning block.
