Fifth-set Rally Lifts Bronchos Past FHSU

EDMOND (Oct. 15) – Jenna Karp served up two aces during a stunning match-ending 9-0 run that lifted No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma to an amazing five-set triumph over Fort Hays State Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos pulled out an incredible 25-27, 22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-9 victory in the nearly two and one-half hour Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association battle, improving to 20-3 on the season and 10-3 in league play.

"What a match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't play very well, but somehow the girls found a way to get it done. It looked like we were out of it, but they fought hard and just never gave up."

UCO was in danger of being swept after dropping the first two sets, but rebounded to take the next two in evening the match only to fall behind 9-6 in the deciding set.

Then the comeback started.

Setter Lindsey Houran got it going with a dump at the net, Mallorie Koehn followed with a hard-hit kill down the middle and Lari Migliorino's emphatic solo block tied it at 9-all.

The Tigers called timeout, but it didn't stem the tide.

A hitting error put the Bronchos on top, Migliorino and Koehn followed with back-to-back kills to make it 12-9 and Karp sandwiched aces around another FHSU miscue to cap the astounding comeback.

Karp hit a sizzling .455 with 16 kills and just one error in 33 attacks to go along with four blocks and the two aces to lead UCO. Sydney Huck had a game-high 22 kills to go with 19 digs, while Koehn finished with 21 kills and three aces.

Migliorino hit .381 in finishing with eight kills and no errors in 21 attacks while also blocking six shots. Houran had 64 assists, 13 digs and five kills, Jaedynn Evans made 35 digs and Katie Le chipped in 19 digs.

The Tigers scored the final three points in pulling out the 27-25 first-set win, then overcame a 20-14 deficit in taking the second one in putting UCO on the ropes.

The Bronchos stayed alive with a dominating third-set effort, getting six kills from Koehn and four each from Karp and Huck in a nine-point victory.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout in the fourth set, which saw 15 ties and nine lead changes.

UCO was up 12-8 after a Koehn kill, but the Tigers pulled even at 14-all and went ahead 18-16. FHSU was still up two at 20-18 when Koehn knocked down consecutive kills and Migliorino followed with a shot down the line that put UCO in front 21-20.

Fort Hays came back to tie it at 22-22, then went up 25-24 with the serve and a chance to end the match. The Bronchos stayed alive on a Huck kill, the Tigers followed with a kill of their own to go up 26-25 and UCO was again down to its last chance.

But FHSU wavered. A service error and ball-handling miscue gave the Bronchos the lead, then Houran and Karp teamed up for a set-winning block that set up the deciding set.

The Bronchos open a three-match conference road swing Tuesday with a 6 p.m. match at Missouri Southern.
