Central Oklahoma Raids Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma beat Emporia State 3-1 Sunday, earning the second road win of the weekend for the Bronchos.

UCO, now 11-2-3 on the season, beat third-place Washburn on Friday night to take over that spot before beating second-place Emporia on Sunday to take over that spot in the MIAA standings.

With two matches left in the regular season, Central Oklahoma is 6-2-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have already clinched a playoff berth and now look to lock up a home playoff game in two weeks.

"We showed a lot of fight this weekend and I'm really proud of the team," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "In both games, we were down 1-0 at halftime and the team did a great job of not giving up and staying focused and getting it done. We're really proud of them and now we need to do it this week and finish strong."

Central Oklahoma erased halftime deficits in both matches this weekend. The Bronchos won 3-1 in both contests.

Sunday, Caroline Faulkner made four first-half saves, only letting one shot by. Emporia scored in the 22nd minute on a strike from more than 20 yards away.

But in the second half, Central responded in a big way.

Zoe Ross scored the first goal in the 58th minute, working down the left side of the box. After a great through pass from Amaya Grace, Ross slid her shot under the Emporia keeper for the score.

In the 64th minute, Grace got a pass behind the Emporia defense. A loose ball bounced behind the keeper and Grace corralled it, steadied, and fired in the short-distance score to give UCO a 2-1 lead.

The Bronchos added one more in the 87th minute for good measure. And Grace was involved again.

This time she had space again around 30 yards out and fed Rebecca Tweedy down the left side. Tweedy punched in the score to make it 3-1.

Emporia outshot the Bronchos 16-10 on Sunday, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. But Faulkner continued what has been a dominant two weeks in goal.

The third-year sophomore from Tulsa made a career-high nine saves, tying the mark she set on Friday night. She had a personal best eight saves in each of the two previous games before that. Faulkner has 34 saves in her last four games (3-1-0).

Central Oklahoma wraps up the regular season next week with games at Rogers State and at Newman. The Bronchos play Friday night at 7 p.m. in Claremore and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Wichita, Kansas.

The 2022 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship is scheduled to begin Sunday, Oct. 30 with the top four teams in the final standings hosting a quarterfinal match. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals and the championship match in November.
