Big Games Abound, Bronchos Beat 'Bods

TOPEKA, Kan. – A second-half scoring spree led Central Oklahoma to a 3-1 win over Washburn Friday night.

UCO is 10-2-3 on the season and now has a 5-2-1 record in the MIAA. The Bronchos and WU were tied for third place in the league standings.

"We had a good response in the second half," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We gave up a late goal before halftime and really needed to respond in the second half and they did. It was a good win against a good team. We need to stay focused on the next one."

UCO plays at Emporia State Sunday at 1 p.m.

Friday night, Central Oklahoma could not get its offense going, taking one shot in the 16th minute, not on goal, and not another through the first 45.

UCO's defense was solid though. The Bronchos faced seven shots, five on goal, and held Washburn off until the 43rd minute. The Ichabods got a goal off a wild loose ball in the box to take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

But in the second half, Central Oklahoma played a different game. Then in the 53rd minute, Madison Linavong lined up a corner kick.

The sophomore midfielder has led the country in assists and still leads the MIAA in setting up the goals for the Bronchos this season. Friday night, she'd already taken one corner moments before on the other side of the field. Now on left corner, Linavong lined up. She put a foot on it and sent toward the back corner of the goal. The shot dropped in the upper 90 out of reach of anyone.

Goal Bronchos and tie game.

Moments later, Monika McGee worked a ball down the right side of the field and made a turn and cross in front of the goal. The ball caromed back to around 10 yards in front of the goal where Amaya Grace was waiting. She drilled home a ball into the bottom right corner and gave UCO a 2-1 lead.

Central Oklahoma controlled the game after that, then Grace added another goal with 75 seconds left in the game. She got a ball from Linavong way out in front of everyone and with open space on the right side of the box, she smashed a shot to the bottom left past the goalkeeper and into the net to give UCO its final 3-1.

UCO was outshot 13-8, with a 10-6 disadvantage in shots on goal. But the Broncho defense, led by Caroline Faulkner's new career-high nine saves, were enough.

Central Oklahoma will play Emporia State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lady Hornets are two points in front of the Bronchos for second place in the MIAA. First-place Central Missouri is also playing at Fort Hays State, which is tied for third with the Bronchos.

UCO will wrap up the regular season next week with games at Rogers State and at Newman. The 2022 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship begins Oct. 30.
