Central Pushes Streak To Nine With RSU Blowout

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team won its ninth consecutive game Saturday evening, blowing out Rogers State 88-68 at Hamilton Field House.
 
Central Oklahoma is now 13-2 on the season and 8-1 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have won nine in a row for the first time since 2011. All nine victories during this stretch have been by at least 10 points, with five of the wins by 20 points. UCO is averaging a margin of victory of 17.4 points during the streak.
 
"The guys just keep fighting and they keep impressing me," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They're getting everything thrown at them right now and they're not worried about any of it. They just go out there and play and they're playing really well."
 
The Bronchos were down star forward Isaiah Wade on Thursday. Didn't matter. The Bronchos were down six players Saturday. Didn't matter.
 
Five Bronchos scored in double figures Saturday, with eight total players scoring at least two points. All 10 available players got in the game for Central.
 
Callen Haydon led UCO with 19 points Saturday. He was 8-for-12 from the field, 2-for-4 from behind the arc, and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. Haydon also had six assists, three steals, two rebounds and two blocked shots.
 
Wade posted 18 points in his return to the court. He went 7-for-14 from the floor, 1-for-3 from outside, and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also added three boards.
 
Jaden Wells chipped in 14 points. He went 5-for-13 from the field and just 2-for-9 from behind the 3-point line, but also added a pair of free-throws. Wells had six rebounds and an assist.
 
Preston Aymond, starting in place of the absent Camryn Givens, scored 12 points to go with eight rebounds, an assist and one blocked shot. Aymond started in place of the absent Wade on Thursday night and the freshman forward from Texas 8.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game on the weekend.
 
Davon Richardson gave Central a fifth player in double figures. He scored 13 points off the bench on 5 of 7 shooting, including one 3-pointer. Richardson also hit two free-throws. He shared a team-high eight rebounds with Aymond and also had three assists and three steals.
 
Jalyn Turner added five points and three assists in a start. Danquez Dawsey also had five points off the bench to go with four rebounds and two assists. Seth Hurd scored two, making the only shot he took.
 
Central Oklahoma and Rogers State went at it in the first half. The spirited contest had six lead changes and the game was tied four times. Rogers State built its biggest lead of the game late in the half, going up 30-25 with four minutes till halftime. Central also held a five-point lead midway through the first half as the squads battled it out.
 
UCO managed a 37-32 lead at the break with a big 12-2 run to close out the half. The Bronchos only allowed one field goal in the final four minutes and hit 5 of 6 shots on the offensive end to grab a lead at the break.
 
Central Oklahoma was just 1-for-12 from behind the 3-point line in the first 20 minutes. It was a much different story in the second half.
 
Aymond, Wells and Richardson all hit 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half, with the last one giving Central a 10-point lead. The Bronchos would hit seven from outside in the half as UCO pulled away from the competition.
 
The Broncho lead got back into single digits thanks to a four-point play by Rogers State with 13:56 to play. But Aymond scored on the next play to push it back to 10 points and the lead only grew from there. Central had its biggest lead of the game, 21 points, when Dawsey made 1 of 2 free-throws with just over a minute left in the game.
 
Central Oklahoma finished the night 32-for-59 overall, a 54.2 percent mark. The Bronchos hit 8 of 27 shots from behind the 3-point line and 16 of 19 shots from the free-throw line.
 
UCO is back on the road next week after a four-game homestand over the past 10 days. Central Oklahoma is scheduled to play at Central Missouri Thursday night before visiting Lincoln on Saturday.
