UCO Routs Wolves To Make National Duals Finals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 7) – Top-ranked Central Oklahoma polished off a 47-4 destruction of Newberry with three straight first-period falls in the semifinals of the NWCA Division II National Duals Friday morning at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

The Bronchos improved to 6-0 in moving into Friday's 2 p.m. title bout against No. 2 St. Cloud State. The four-time defending champion Huskies beat No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney 19-14 in the other semifinal for their NCAA-record 77th consecutive victory.

It will be UCO's first finals appearance since 2004 and the Bronchos last won the tournament in 2002.

"We came out with a little more fire today," head coach Todd Steidley said. "Our guys stayed aggressive and that's always good to see. We have a tough challenge ahead of us, but we're looking forward to it."

Central earned bonus points in eight of its nine wins against the unranked Wolves, including four opening-period falls.

Hunter Jump had the first of those at 165, while 184 Alex Kauffman, 197 Dalton Abney and Hvy Christian Arriola closed out the mismatch with three in a row.

All four scored early takedowns before ending the action. Kauffman had the quickest pin at 1:13, while Abney needed just 1:38, Jump 2:10 and Arriola 2:28.

The Bronchos also got technical falls from 133 Tanner Cole and 157 Ty Lucas and a major decision from 149 Brik Filippo.

Cole had four takedowns and a near-fall in a 16-1 rout, while Lucas notched four takedowns and three near-falls in a 20-1 battering. Filippo rolled up four takedowns and two near-falls in rolling 17-3.

Nate Keim earned the only regular decision at 141, pulling out a wild 11-10 win on a riding time point. Paxton Rosen picked up a forfeit to open the match.
