No. 9 Central Oklahoma's Historic Streak Ends In Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 9 Central Oklahoma saw its historic 13-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos fell short in a spirited MIAA battle against Washburn, 96-86, at Lee Arena.

Central Oklahoma is now 17-3 on the season following the loss and the Bronchos are 12-2 in the MIAA. UCO's 13-game win streak is the third-longest of any team in school history.

"We're moving on from this and now it's all about how you respond," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We played okay today but not great. And you can't afford to do that. Credit to Washburn, they're a good team and now they're getting healthy so they'll be good. And now we'll respond."

Isaiah Wade scored a game-high 28 points to go with seven rebounds. He was 11-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-10 from the free-throw line. Camryn Givens added 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line before he fouled out. Givens hit two 3-pointers as well but recorded his fifth foul after playing just 22 minutes.

Callen Haydon scored 14 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. He went 4-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Jaden Wells scored 12 points, going 3-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. In a rare occurrence, Haydon was 0-for-3 from behind the arc and Wells was 0-for-6.

Davon Richardson chipped in with eight points, Carson Calavan scored five, and Preston Aymond added four.

Central Oklahoma scored the game's first basket, a Givens layup in the first minute of play. Washburn went in front with a 3-pointer before UCO took the lead again with two Haydon free-throws. That made it 4-3 just two minutes into play. Washburn took a 5-4 lead before Wade made his first free-throw of the game to tie it up, 5-5, with 17:10 to play in the opening half.

Then a 9-0 Washburn run changed everything.

Central never recovered. Washburn led for 18:20 of the first half and gained as much as a 15-point lead, hitting 3-pointer with three seconds left in the opening half.

Washburn just sat on that lead for most of the second half. UCO cut it back to single digits when Wells made a fastbreak layup after getting a steal. That made it 52-44 with 15:42 to play. It was eight again after the teams traded 3-pointers but it grew back to 14 five minutes later.

Central cut it to six in the dying minutes before Washburn settled on the 10-point victory.

UCO beat Washburn 97-87 in Edmond. Washburn beat UCO 96-86 in Topeka.

Central Oklahoma returns to Hamilton Field House next week to take on Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State. The Bronchos will take on UNK Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton before welcoming Hays to Hamilton on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
