No. 9 Central Oklahoma Keeps Winning

Bronchos In Comeback Fashion Win UCO's 13th Consecutive Game

EMPORIA, Kan. – No. 9 Central Oklahoma made a big, second-half comeback to beat Emporia State 88-83 Thursday night in a top-tier MIAA matchup at White Auditorium.

UCO trailed by 10 points more than once in the second half before a big rally late gave the Bronchos a lead and Central pulled away in the end.

"The guys were great tonight," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "When we were down in the second half, they didn't give up, they didn't panic, they just picked up each other and found a way to get through it get a win. They were amazing."

UCO is now 17-2 this season and 12-1 in the MIAA. The first-place Bronchos have won 13 consecutive games. It's the fifth such streak in school history and the first since UCO set a school record with 16 straight wins during the 2009-10 season.

Isaiah Wade led No. 9 Central Oklahoma Thursday night. The same week he celebrated his 24th birthday being named MIAA Player of the Week, went for 23 points and 15 rebounds. Wade was 10-for-17 from the floor, including one 3-pointer, and he went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He also had two assists and one steal.

Camryn Givens had another big game as the two Central bigs worked hard in the paint for everything they could get Thursday. Givens scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. He went 5-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Callen Haydon scored 15 points to go with a game-high nine assists. He went 5-for-12 from the floor but hit a team-high three 3-pointers and added two free-throws. Haydson crossed the 100-assist mark Thursday night and has a league-leading 106 this season, which is top 10 in the country as well. He also had three rebounds and one steal.

Jaden Wells gave UCO four Bronchos in double figures. Wells scored 12 points on 3 of 6 shooting, including 2 of 4 from behind the 3-point line. He was also 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Wells also had seven rebounds and one assist.

Jalyn Turner added six points thanks to two 3-pointers in the first half. Preston Aymond (eight) and Davon Richardson (seven) compiled the 15 bench points for the Bronchos on Thursday night.

Central Oklahoma and Emporia State went back and forth in the first half. ESU scored first, but the Bronchos led early, 6-5 and 9-7. Emporia went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead, but the Bronchos responded to that with a 13-0 run to take a big 22-14 lead. Emporia though again answered that with a run of its own, taking its biggest lead of the first half with an 8-0 run to go up 35-29 with five minutes left in the first half. UCO closed the gap on a couple of occasions after that and trailed 45-41 at halftime.

The second half deviated from that pattern, for at least the first 10 minutes. Emporia seemed in control, leading by as many as 10 points five minutes into the half and again with 11 minutes left in the game. UCO then went on 7-0 run to cut it to 66-63 with nine minutes to play.

Emporia got back up by six with eight minutes left, but the Bronchos continued that run. Carson Calavan lobbed a halfcourt alley-oop to Wade, who converted it with a layup while being fouled. Wade then converted the 3-point play and after an ESU turnover, he scored again to make it a one-point game. Another stop on the defensive end and another Wade bucket in the paint and Central Oklahoma was back in the lead, 70-69.

Emporia went back in front again, 71-70, but Wade responded again, scoring his ninth straight point to put the Bronchos ahead 72-71.

Wade's personal 9-2 run in the second half, spanning just over two and a half minutes, gave Central Oklahoma the lead for good. UCO didn't trail again after he put them up with 5:20 to play in the game.

Central Oklahoma led by as many as seven down the stretch as the Bronchos found their way to a 13th consecutive victory.

UCO will continue a week away from home with a trip to Topeka, Kansas on Saturday. The Bronchos face Washburn at 3 p.m. from Lee Arena in what should be another wild game for the Bronchos. Central beat Washburn 97-87 in overtime in Edmond last month.
