Bronchos Downed At Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped Thursday night with an 88-80 loss at Central Missouri.

UCO is now 10-6 overall this season and 6-4 in the MIAA. The Bronchos are back in action Saturday at Lincoln.

"We didn't start off very well and that ended up hurting us," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We were down 10 after one quarter and we lose by eight. We needed a better start. But we'll move on from this and try and rebound on Saturday."

Central Oklahoma was outscored 25-15 in the first quarter and the Bronchos were down by 12 at halftime before slowly chipping away at the lead for the rest of the game. UCO had it down to six with about a minute to go but couldn't finish off the comeback.

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She was 8-for-21 from the floor, overcoming an 0-for-7 start. She also went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, extending her streak at the stripe 23 consecutive makes. Johnson also had three blocks, two assists and one steal.

Alayzha Knapp added 18 points and six rebounds. She was 8-for-10 from the field and also had one steal. Karly Wadsworth added 15 points, hitting a season-high five 3-pointers for the second time this year. Wadsworth was 5-for-10 overall and 5-for-9 from deep.

Brooke Rayner gave UCO four in double figures, scoring 13 points to go with four steals. She hit three 3-pointers.

Johnson went a perfect 5-for-5 from the line and Knapp was also 2-for-2. Rayner, who hadn't missed all season, went 2-for-4. But that rounded out the free-throws for the whole Broncho squad Thursday night.

UCO was 9-for-11 from the line. Central Missouri was 32-for-40.

Knapp scored the first bucket of the game Thursday. UCM got two free-throws to pull it back even on the other end and begin its marathon night at the line. Knapp scored again to give UCO a 4-2 lead, but an 8-0 run by the Jennies followed and suddenly the Bronchos trailed 10-4. UCO never recovered.

Central was down 25-15 after one quarter. UCM hit 8 of 10 free-throws in the first 10 minutes. The Bronchos were pretty close to even in the second frame, shooting over 50 percent and hitting three shots from behind the 3-point line. But UCM had a 7-1 advantage in free-throws and took a 47-35 lead to halftime.
