Bronchos Tame Tigers

ADA, Okla. (Sept. 8) – Central Oklahoma threw up a block party in dispatching intrastate rival East Central Wednesday night at the Kerr Activities Center.

The Bronchos rejected 14 shots in notching a 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 victory and improving to 3-1 on the young season. It was UCO's 11th straight win over the Tigers.

"We got off to a slow start, but our defense at the net was pretty good tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got contributions from a lot of players and that's always great to see."

Lauren Jenkins led a balanced offensive attack with 13 kills and Courtney Lane had 11. Nalani McCrary, Jenna Karp and Amanda Desch had five kills apiece.

Defense at the net is where UCO really shined. Karp had eight blocks (seven assisted, one solo), while McCrary had six assisted blocks, Lane and Desch four each and Jenkins three.

Desch also had 34 assists and 11 digs. Katie Le led the back-row defense with 21 digs and Bella Burns chipped in 11 digs and two service aces.

UCO fell behind early in the opening set and couldn't quite complete a late comeback as the Tigers earned a two-point win to take the early lead.

The Bronchos responded quickly, getting an ace from Le and kill from Jenkins in grabbing a 3-0 lead to start the second set. Another Jenkins kill had UCO on top 8-4, but ECU scored four straight points to tie it up.

It was tied again at 11 and 12 before Jenkins had two kills in an 8-1 run that made it 20-13 and the Bronchos cruised in from there.

Jenkins stayed hot in the third set, collecting three early kills as Central jumped out to an 8-2 lead. ECU couldn't answer and a Desch dump at the net capped off the 25-17 win.

UCO grabbed another early lead in the fourth set, going ahead 6-2 on a combined block by Jenkins and Karp. It was a three-point advantage at 16-13 when the Bronchos broke it open with six unanswered points, getting two blocks from Karp and a Burns ace in that surge.

The Tigers came back with a 6-0 run of their own to get close at 22-19, but kills by Alycia Bradley-Adriano and McCray and a Karp ace finished off the set that closed out the match.

UCO makes its home debut this weekend, hosting four matches in the Broncho Invitational. Central opens at 10 a.m. Friday against Western Colorado.
