UCO Opens Own Tourney With Sweep

EDMOND (Sept. 10) – Courtney Lane racked up 20 kills and Central Oklahoma rolled past Western Colorado Friday morning at Hamilton Field House on the first day of the  Broncho Invitational.

UCO's first home match since Nov. 9, 2019 was a rousing success as the Bronchos claimed 25-16, 25-23, 25-12 victories in improving to 4-1 on the young season.

"We got off to a strong start and played pretty well," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team plays again at 5 p.m. against Western New Mexico. "Our offense was pretty efficient. It was good to finally play at home after such a long time."

Central hit .300 as a team with 49 kills and 13 errors in 120 attacks.

Lane led the way, hitting a solid .275 with 20 kills and six miscues in 51 attempts. The sophomore outside hitter added 11 digs and two assisted blocks.

Lauren Jenkins hit .412 with eight kills and just one mistake in 17 attacks, while Brynn Egger had seven kills and one error in 17 tries in hitting .353. Nalani McCrary added five kills.

Jenna Karp had six blocks and three kills, Mallory Hendrix distributed 34 assists in her first extended duty at setter and Bella Burns made a match-high 19 digs.

UCO never trailed in the opening set and got two kills from McCrary in a 7-0 run that turned a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 lead. The Mountaineers never got closer than five the rest of the way.

The second set was more of a battle, with 11 ties and four lead changes. The Bronchos trailed 18-15, but came back to go ahead 20-19 on a combined block by Karp and Lane.

It was tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 before UCO scored the final two points. Lane and McCrary teamed up for a block before Lane ended it with her eighth kill of the set.

The Bronchos dominated the third set, hitting .343 and getting seven more kills from Lane to close out the match.
