UCO Falls To No. 20 Patriots

DURANT, Okla. (Sept. 4) – Central Oklahoma put up a battle, but the Bronchos couldn't stay with No. 20-ranked Texas-Tyler in the end in dropping a four-set decision Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Southeastern Oklahoma Classic.

The Patriots completed a perfect 4-0 weekend by beating UCO 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20. The Bronchos finished the season-opening weekend 2-1, beating New Mexico Highlands and host SOSU on Friday.

"UT-Tyler has a really strong team and they proved that today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played well in stretches and gave ourselves a chance in every set, but we weren't consistent enough. I thought it was a good weekend for us overall and we learned a lot about ourselves."

Courtney Lane led the way with 13 kills, 10 digs and two service aces. Jenna Karp had seven kills and three blocks, Mallorie Koehn added six kills and eight digs and Nalani McCrary contributed five kills and three blocks.

Amanda Desch distributed 36 assists to go with three kills and two aces, while Katie Le had a team-high 24 digs.

The Bronchos never led in the opening set and it was only tied twice, at 1-1 and 2-2. UCO fell behind 14-7, then battled back to get within four at 22-18 after a McCrary kill before the Patriots finally put the set away.

UTT jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second set and was up 19-10 when the Bronchos tried to rally. Lane had a kill and service ace in a 6-1 run that got Central within 20-16 and it was still a four-point match at 22-18 after Desch and Karp teamed up for a block.

But that was as close as UCO could get as the Patriots closed out the set to take command of the match.

The Bronchos came out firing in the third set to stay alive, getting two kills apiece from Karp and Lane in grabbing a quick 7-2 lead. It was 10-5 when Koehn sparked a 5-0 run with a pair of kills to give UCO a big 15-5 advantage.

The lead was still 10 (19-9) after another Lane kill, but UTT made things interested with a 9-1 scoring spurt to get within 20-18. Lane's fifth kill of the set got Central going again and the Bronchos got a big block from Payton Bell and set-ending kill from Brynn Egger in finishing off the 25-19 win.

UCO served up five aces – with Desch making two straight – in taking a 12-10 lead in the fourth set and it was 14-12 after a Lane blast down the middle.

The Patriots came roaring back, ripping off nine unanswered points to zip in front 21-14. The Bronchos tried to battle back, but could get no closer than four the rest of the way.

UCO returns to action Wednesday at East Central, then makes its home debut next weekend with four matches in the Broncho Invitational.
