Central Oklahoma Blanks Midwestern State In 2021 Home Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team earned its first win of the 2021 season Saturday night with a 1-0 blanking of Midwestern State in a non-conference matchup at Tom Thompson Field.

Kassidy Collins scored the lone goal in the 79th minute to give Central all the offense it needed for the victory.

"Kassidy did an awesome job with that ball," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "She got a good pass from Taryn Kedzior and she didn't really have numbers, but she found an opening and put a great shot in the back of the net.

"Our defense was really good tonight too though," Cook continued. "Kaitlyn Asher played awesome in goal again and the defense was solid in front of her. This was a good game but we know we can still get better."

Central Oklahoma outshot Midwestern State 13-7, with an advantage in both halves. The Bronchos kept that pressure going throughout the game and it paid off late.

Avery Holland intercepted an MSU pass just after the clock entered the 79th minute, and quickly moved the ball forward to Kedzior, who turned into open space and sent a lead pass ahead to Collins.

The second-year freshman from Owasso, Oklahoma then brought the ball down with her chest and stood right in front of two Midwestern State defenders. Her quick thinking took her to her right and she blew right past the defender to get open space. Just inside the 18, Collins stepped and fired a shot to the left side of the outreached MSU keeper and into the back of the net.

UCO spent the last 10 minutes working the ball up the field and to the corners to play out the clock. MSU never countered.

Asher picked up the win after playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos. The fifth-year senior made four saves and also had several key punch-outs on MSU crosses.

The Bronchos took 13 shots in the game and put seven on goal. Kedzior had two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Meredith Wilson, Monika McGee, Brooke Moore, and Adria Ramirez also took shots on goal.

Central Oklahoma had its 2021 season opener spoiled at Dallas Baptist Thursday night but made up for it with a win in its home opener. The Bronchos will continue a four-game homestand next week. UCO hosts Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, Sept. 9 and Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 11.
