UCO Opens Season With Sweep

DURANT, Okla. (Sept. 3) – Courtney Lane knocked down 14 kills and Central Oklahoma made a successful return to the court with a sweep of New Mexico Highlands Friday morning on the first day of the Southeastern Oklahoma Classic.

The Bronchos prevailed 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 in their first official match since the end of the 2019 season -- a span of 652 days – after the 2020 campaign was canceled the coronavirus pandemic. UCO is back in action at 4 p.m. against the host Savage Storm, then finish the two-event Saturday with a 1 p.m contest against No. 20-ranked Texas-Tyler.

"It was good to finally play a real match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We obviously made a lot of mistakes, but we also did a lot of good things and I was really happy with our effort. The players were excited to be back and it showed."

Lane's 14 kills led the way and the sophomore outside hitter added seven digs and two assisted blocks. Nalani McCrary, Jenna Karp and Mallory Hendrix added six kills apiece, with Karp also making four assisted blocks.

Amanda Desch handed out 33 assists to go along with five digs and three kills, while Katie Le led the back-row defense with 16 digs from her libero position.

All three sets were competitive throughout, with the Bronchos using late surges in each to take the sweep.

Central led 21-16 in the opening set after a Desch kill, but the Cowgirls reeled off five unanswered points to tie it at 21-all. Desch's solo block put the Bronchos in front and McCrary followed with smash down the middle to make it 23-21.

NMHU scored to get within a point again, but a service error put UCO back in control and Desch finished off the win with a service ace.

The Bronchos trailed 7-6 in the second set before scoring four straight points to take the lead for good. It was still close at 19-16 before consecutive kills by Karp, Mallorie Koehn and Lane made it 22-16.

A pair of attack errors and another Karp kill enabled UCO to finish off the set and take command of the match.

The third set went back-and-forth. Hendrix's ace put Central on top 19-16 before the Cowgirls went on a 3-0 run to tie it.

But again the Bronchos came through in the clutch. Desch dumped a kill deep in the backcourt, Lane followed with a shot down the line and Bella Burns had an ace during a 4-0 spurt that made it 24-19.

NMHU stayed alive with three consecutive points to get within 24-22, then Karp powered a kill off a block attempt to close out the set and the match.
