Jenkins Sparks Bronchos In Five-Set Thriller

DURANT, Okla. (Sept. 3) – Lauren Jenkins had four of her career-high 21 kills in the decisive fifth set to spark Central Oklahoma to a hard-fought win over Southeastern Oklahoma Friday evening on the first day of the SOSU Classic.

The Bronchos pulled out a thrilling 21-25, 25-17, 25-15, 27-29, 15-9 victory to finish off a perfect 2-0 day after sweeping New Mexico Highlands earlier. UCO wraps up the two-event Saturday with a 1 p.m contest against No. 20-ranked Texas-Tyler.

"That was a really tough match, but we found a way to get it done," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We battled hard the entire match. There were a lot of big momentum shifts and we made some big plays at the end."

Jenkins was the star, knocking down 21 kills with just six errors in 45 attacks for a .333 attack percentage. Courtney Lane chipped in 14 kills and 17 digs, while Jenna Karp had 12 kills and five blocks.

The Bronchos also got seven kills and four blocks from Nalani McCrary, 49 assists, 15 digs and five kills from Amanda Desch and 31 digs from Katie Le.

The Savage Storm took the first set of the match before UCO rebounded to take the next two. SOSU then pulled out a wild fourth-set win, but the Bronchos finally prevailed in notching their 12th straight win in the series.

Southeastern led 4-2 early in the fifth set, but Jenkins knocked down three kills in a 6-1 run to put Central in front 8-5. It was a 10-7 lead after another Jenkins kill, then a Karp kill and SOSU attack error made it 12-8.

The Savage Storm scored to stay alive before Karp's hard-hit kill off a block attempt sandwiched between two errors gave the Bronchos the match.

SOSU jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the opening set and was up 11-8 when the Bronchos rallied with five unanswered points to move in front 13-11.

Karp had a kill at the net and joined with Desch in a block while Bella Burns served up an ace and Jenkins slammed down a cross-court kill during that spurt. The Savage Storm answered with a 6-2 run to go ahead 17-15 and UCO never caught up.

The Bronchos pulled even by taking the second set, getting four kills from Karp along with three blocks and a kill from McCrary.

UCO scored seven straight points to turn a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 lead as McCrary had two blocks. The Savage Storm got within four at 16-12, but kills from four different players along with a Desch ace and another McCrary rejection during a 6-1 run made it 22-13.

Karp had two kills the rest of the way as Central closed out the set.

The Bronchos followed the same script in the third set, using a 6-0 scoring spurt to break away from a 2-2 tie. It was still a six-point advantage at 13-7 after a Lane kill, then a 5-1 run pull SOSU within 14-12.

It was all UCO after that. Jenkins had three consecutive kills during one stretch and Karp smacked down two straight smashes to finish off the 10-point rout.

Southeastern grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the fourth set, but Jenkins had three kills in a 4-0 run that put UCO in front and the Bronchos went on top 10-6 on a Desch kill.

The Savage Storm came back to tie it at 13-all and it was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way. UCO was down 21-19 before rallying to go ahead 23-22 and then led 24-23 after another Jenkins kill.

But the Bronchos couldn't finish it off as SOSU came back to take the wild 29-27 win in forcing the fifth set.
