Bronchos Top Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. (Sept. 28) – Brynn Egger had three kills and a block down the stretch to spark a closing surge that carried Central Oklahoma to a tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Missouri Southern Tuesday night.

UCO improved to 11-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play with the 25-16, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24 victory. The Bronchos, winner of fourth straight, go back on the road this weekend with back-to-back MIAA matches at Emporia State and top-ranked Washburn.

"That was a tough match, but we found a way to come out with a really good win on the road," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had several players make some big plays down the stretch."

Egger paced a balanced attack with 11 kills. Lauren Jenkins and Jenna Karp had 10 kills apiece, with Jenkins adding six blocks and Karp four.

Amanda Desch had yet another stellar all-around outing with 36 assists, 14 digs and six kills. Nalani McCrary chipped in six blocks and four kills, while Katie Le 26 digs.

UCO trailed 11-7 in the fourth set before coming back, using a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-11 and it was close the rest of the way. The Lions were on top 20-18 when back-to-back kills by Payton Bell and Egger tied it.

Egger offset a MSSU point with another kill, then followed an attack error by teaming with Karp for a block that made it 23-21. The Lions answered with three straight points to pull ahead 24-23.

But the Bronchos closed strong, getting consecutive kills from Egger, Jenkins and Karp to rally for the match-ending win.

The first set was close early and the Bronchos trailed 13-11 before taking charge. UCO went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 17-14, taking the lead for good on a Egger kill.

Central finished the set on a 9-2 spurt, getting two kills and a solo block from Jenkins in that closing surge.

MSSU  jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and was up most of the way before the Bronchos rallied late. UCO trailed 19-17, then used a 3-0 run to go ahead 20-19 on a Jenkins kill.

The Lions tied it at 20-all, but it was all UCO after that. Kemp had a kill, then teamed with Desch for a block to make it 22-20, with consecutive kills by Jenkins, Desch and Karp capping off the set-closing 5-0 run.

Missouri Southern grabbed a quick 4-0 lead and never trailed in taking the third set.
