Bronchos Shutout NSU, Again

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma made it a season sweep of longtime rival Northeastern State Sunday afternoon when the Bronchos won 1-0 in the first MIAA match of the 2021 season.

UCO, now 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, also beat NSU 4-0 last Friday in a non-conference match between the schools. NSU is 3-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the MIAA.

"We had several chances but just couldn't convert," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "Our defense did a great job today getting another shutout and we were fortunate to get one on the board to get the win."

Central Oklahoma outshot Northeastern State 14-8 on the afternoon, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams secured three corner kicks.

It wasn't until the 79th minute that the Bronchos broke through.

Taryn Kedzior found a loose ball and tried to direct the play to her left on the left side of the box. She was fouled by an NSU defender though and the referee awarded the Bronchos a penalty kick.

Monika McGee lined it up and fired home the shot to put Central Oklahoma on the scoreboard and in the lead. The goal was the difference Sunday.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos and saved all four of NSU's shots on goal.

McGee took a team-high three shots in the game and had two on target. Kedzior took two herself as did Kassidy Collins.

Central Oklahoma will travel to Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney next weekend as MIAA play is now underway.
