Bronchos Stun No. 4 UNK

EDMOND (Sept. 25) – A series of acrobatic saves by Katie Le kept numerous Central Oklahoma rallies alive and the Bronchos rode an outstanding defensive effort to a stunning four-set upset of No. 4-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Le, a freshman libero who gets better with every outing, dug up 31 attacks from the hard-hitting Lopers – turning two of those into kills – as UCO claimed a 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21 victory over the defending Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champions.

The Bronchos improved to 10-2 on the season and 3-1 in league play while staying perfect (6-0) at home. UNK fell to 11-2 and 2-2.

"That was a big-time win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We battled hard the entire match. It seemed like we were running out of energy in the fourth set, but we got our second wind and were able to finish it off. I'm just so proud of the way this team keeps fighting."

Jenna Karp and Courtney Lane had 16 kills apiece to lead the offense, with Karp committing just three errors in 31 attacks for a .419 hitting percentage. The freshman also had four blocks, while Lane added eight digs and two blocks.

Lauren Jenkins chipped in 13 kills and Brynn Egger came off the bench in the final three sets to hit .400 with nine kills and one miscue in 20 attempts. Amanda Desch had another outstanding all-around outing with 44 assists, 20 digs, three kills and two blocks.

Le's performance highlighted a sensational defensive effort by the Bronchos, though Mallory Hendrix (16 digs) and Bella Burns (15) had plenty of super saves themselves.

Central showed that it was ready to play from the outset, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set behind two Lane kills. The Lopers rallied to tie it 8-8, but Le's ace highlighted a 3-0 run that put the Bronchos in front to stay at 11-8.

Lane and Karp finished the set with five kills each as UCO took the lead.

The second set went back-and-forth early. The Bronchos led 16-15 when Egger entered the match for the first time and the freshman quickly hammered a shot down the middle to ignite a 6-1 run that made it 22-16.

Nebraska-Kearney came back to get close at 23-21, but kills by Karp and Lane ended the set to make it a 2-0 advantage.

The Lopers stayed alive with their third set win, then overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the fourth to take an 11-8 lead. UCO responded, getting two kills from Karp and one apiece from Desch and Egger in surging in front 13-11.

The Bronchos kept the pressure on and built the lead to 18-13 behind a pair of Jenkins kills, then got two kills from Karp and two from Egger the rest of the way to close out the monumental upset.

UCO opens a three-match league road swing Tuesday with a trip to Joplin, Mo. to take on Missouri Southern.
