Central Oklahoma Takes Down Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma continued its dominance over in-state MIAA foe Rogers State with a 3-2 win Friday night in what was a non-conference matchup between the two schools.

UCO, now 4-2-1 on the season, wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a win – its fourth in as many tries against RSU. The Bronchos will enter MIAA play Sunday with a trip to Northeastern State.

"We did a good job early setting the tone," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We think we could have done a better job not letting them keep it close, but we were tested and we came out with a win so that's a good thing. It's good to finish the non-conference games with a win."

Taryn Kedzior, who is from Claremore, opened the scoring bill for the Bronchos Friday night in her hometown. The fourth-year junior found room just above the box on the left side and fired a shot, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The score came in just the eighth minute of play to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Monika McGee doubled the lead about a half-hour later. In the 39th minute, a foul by Rogers State left the Bronchos with a golden opportunity to take a free kick from about 20 yards out directly in front of the goal. McGee took the kick and slid a line drive through the defense and right past the Rogers State goalkeeper. It was the third goal of the season for McGee to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the first half. She wasn't done on the night though.

Rogers State got on the board after a penalty in the 44th minute. But in the second half, McGee struck again.

In the 65th minute, another free kick by the Bronchos provided another chance. Kedzior took the free kick from 40-plus yards out and almost netted a goal on the shot. The Rogers State keeper deflected the ball and McGee was in perfect position to tap in her second goal of the game from just a few feet away in front of the right post.

Rogers responded to that with another goal just two minutes later, but the Bronchos held the 3-2 lead for the final 24 minutes of the game.

Central Oklahoma outshot Rogers State 18-11 in the game, with the Bronchos putting 11 shots on goal to RSU's five. Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for UCO and made two saves in earning her third win of the season.

McGee put up a game-high five shots. Kedzior put up four shots herself. Kassidy Collins also took four shots and put three on goal.

Central Oklahoma will begin MIAA play Sunday at Northeastern State. The Bronchos beat NSU 4-0 last Friday in the yearly non-conference match between the two longtime rivals.
