Bronchos Fall At Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Sept. 17) – Central Oklahoma opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a hard-fought three-set loss to Pittsburg State Friday night.

The Bronchos had a five-match winning streak stopped with a 27-25, 25-23, 27-25 loss in their conference opener. UCO, now 7-2 on the season, moves on to Wichita, Kan. Saturday to take on Newman at 12 p.m.

"It was a tough match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had a chance in every set and just didn't make the plays down the stretch that we needed to."

Courtney Lane led Central with 13 kills. Jenna Karp had eight kills, while Lauren Jenkins added six.

The Bronchos also got four kills apiece from Mallory Hendrix and Nalani McCrary. Katie Le has had 14 digs to lead the back-row defense.

UCO fell behind 12-7 in the first set before rallying to take a 22-21 lead on a Lane ace. A Karp kill had the match tied at 25-all, but the Gorillas scored the final two points to take the set.

The Bronchos fell behind early again in the second set, but came back to take a 15-13 lead on a Jenkins kill. PSU rallied to go ahead 23-20 and the Gorillas went on to take the set.

Le and Karp had aces and Lane two kills as UCO grabbed an 11-7 lead in the third set. The Bronchos were still up 14-9 after a Pitt State attack error, but the Gorillas then went on a 6-1 run to tie it.

PSU led 23-21 before kills by Lane, Karp and Le helped Central go ahead 25-24. But the Bronchos couldn't finish it off and the Gorillas scored the final three points to finish off the hard-fought sweep.
