UCO Stays Perfect In Own Tourney With Sweep

EDMOND (Sept. 11) – It was another slow start for Central Oklahoma, but there was no stopping the Bronchos once they got going.

UCO trailed East Central 8-3 in the early going of Saturday morning's first set before roaring back for a 25-15 rout. Lopsided wins of 25-17 and 25-15 finished off the sweep at Hamilton Field House as the Bronchos improved to 6-1 with their fourth straight win.

Central returns at 6 p.m. to meet near-by rival Oklahoma Christian for the first time to finish off the two-day Broncho Invitational.

"It was a struggle to get going, just like in our last match," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team lost the first set to Western New Mexico Friday night before coming back to win in four. "We did a good job overcoming that and really played well to finish off the first set, which set us up for the rest of the match."

Courtney Lane led a balanced offensive attack with 13 kills while adding nine digs and two blocks. Jenna Karp and Lauren Jenkins had seven kills apiece, with Karp also rejecting three shots.

Nalani McCrary chipped in six kills and three blocks and Brynn Egger had five kills. Mallory Hendrix also had five kills to go along with 35 assists, five digs and two blocks.

Katie Le (15 digs) and Bella Burns (14) led UCO's back-row defense.

The Tigers jetted to a quick 8-3 lead to open the match before UCO responded with a 7-1 run to take a 10-9 lead. ECU tied it at 10, then the Bronchos took control with nine unanswered points.

Karp sparked that charge with two kills, a solo block and two assisted ones as Central went ahead 19-10 en route to winning the set easily.

Lane had five kills, while Karp and Egger had three each in the second set romp, while Jenkins had five kills in the third set as the Bronchos finished off the sweep.
