Bronchos Overcome Slow Start To Top WNMU

EDMOND (Sept. 10) – Central Oklahoma overcame a slow start to steamroll Western New Mexico Friday evening at Hamilton Field House to finish first-day play in the Broncho Invitational.

The Bronchos dropped a 27-25 first-set decision before dominating the rest of the match, winning 25-13, 25-9 and 25-16 to claim their third straight victory.

UCO, now 5-1, returns Saturday to take on East Central at 10:30 a.m. and Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m. to finish off the weekend event.

"We didn't come out ready to play and really struggled at the start," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Losing that first set was a good wake-up call for us. Our offense started clicking after that and we were able to get a lot of players on the court."

The Bronchos made five errors in hitting just .238 in the opening set, then had just six combined miscues in the final three sets. UCO ended up hitting a season-high .362 and all 13 players saw action.

Courtney Lane finished off a strong day, hitting a sizzling .419 with a career-best 21 kills. The sophomore outside hitter tied her previous high with 20 kills in a sweep of Western Colorado to UCO's first match.

Lane had just three errors in 43 attacks while adding 11 digs and three service aces.

Jenna Karp chipped in 10 kills and three blocks, Lauren Jenkins had nine kills and three blocks and Brynn Egger hit .533 with eight kills and no errors in 15 attempts.

Central also got five kills and four blocks from Nalani McCrary and Alycia Bradley-Adriano knocked down four kills. Mallory Hendrix handed out 47 assists and made 16 digs, with Katie Le collecting a match-high 19 digs.

The Bronchos recovered quickly after dropping the first set, getting six kills from Lane and four from Egger in rolling to the easy second-set win.

UCO took control of the match in the third set, scoring the first eight points and taking a 12-1 lead on its way to a 16-point rout as seven different players had at least one kill.

The fourth set was close early, but Bradley-Adriano had two kills in a 5-0 run that turned a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 lead and the Bronchos pulled away from there.
