Bronchos Force Game 3 With Win At Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team, staring down the end of the road, came up with a victory over Missouri Southern to live at least one more day.

Central Oklahoma 4, Missouri Southern 1.

UCO forced a winner-take-all Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m. in Joplin. The Bronchos dropped Game 1 5-3 Friday afternoon before taking Game 2 Saturday afternoon. A complete game gem from Jacob Bailey led the charge.

"Jacob was really good today and we needed that," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our guys were good at the plate and gave him a lead and he was really solid for us. We got one more tomorrow for everything and we need to just come out and play like we did today."

Bailey (3-2) threw nine innings, his first career complete game at Central and the only complete game by any Broncho this season. He allowed only one run - a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. Bailey gave up six hits and issued three walks, but also had four strikeouts in the game.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Garrett Takamatsu hit a one-out triple before Zac Freeman's sacrifice-fly to center field scored Takamatsu. MSSU answered back with its only run in the bottom half of the inning.

Bennett Laurence had an answer for Southern's home run with one of his own in the top of the third to put the Bronchos back in front. His solo shot to right field proved to be the go-ahead run.

Takmatsu added an RBI single in the sixth to score Philip Scott and Shane Nixon drew a bases loaded walk in the eighth that also scored Scott to add the final two runs for the Bronchos.

Scott led UCO at the plate, going 2-for-4 with the two runs scored. Takmatsu also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Mondragon and Laurence both went 1-for-4.

Game 3 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner advances in the MIAA Tournament to the final four, which is also in Joplin next weekend.

The MIAA Tournament this season pitted the top four seeds against the next four in best-of-three series at the higher seed's respective campuses. UCO and Southern are the only of the first four series to go to a winner take all Game 3.
