Academic Awards: The Grace Shin Courage Award

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department's annual Academic Awards Banquet could not be held in 2021 as the ongoing pandemic continues to alter operations.

Similar to 2020, the athletic department is still recognizing those student-athletes for their superior achievements in the classroom. Up next for recognition of this week's festivities is the Grace Shin Courage Award.

Named for former UCO women's golfer Grace Shin, a former UCO women's golfer who passed away in 2018 after a battle with leukemia. The award recognizes an individual who displayed the same courage, fight, and determination she showed during that battle.

The 2021 recipient is Derek Loccident.

Loccident is a UCO football player and earlier this spring showed the Broncho family, fans, and everyone else what courage and strength and resiliency can look like.

In 2018, he lost his foot in a train accident. Three years later, he was back on the football field.

Loccident has been a constant reminder at Central, that it's not always about what happens to you, it's about how you respond.

After several surgeries and years of rehab, Loccident is back on the field doing what he loves and representing the Bronchos with the utmost class and respect.

That's a reflection of Shin and that's the spirit of the Grace Shin Courage Award.
