Huggins Homer Sparks UCO

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 17) – Amelya Huggins smacked a three-run home run as Central Oklahoma rallied past Washburn 4-3 in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos trailed 3-0 after three innings before scoring four unanswered runs to pull out the come-from-behind win. UCO improved to 25-8 on the season and 14-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play heading into the nightcap.

"We did a nice job not getting rattled after we got behind," head coach Cody White said. "Corrina (Rivas) settled down after struggling a little early, our defense was really good and Amelya's homer was a huge boost."

Rivas went the distance in the pitching circle, improving to 13-4 with her ninth complete game of the season. The junior right-hander gave up eight hits, but allowed just two in the final four innings. She struck out two batters and had no walks.

Central also continued its stellar defensive play with its 23rd error-less game of the season, including the sixth straight.

The Ichabods – playing their first game in three weeks due to COVID protocols -- used a three-run volley in the third to break on top 3-0, but the Bronchos answered right back in the fourth to pull even.

Lexy Dobson drew a walk to start a one-out rally, Taylor McKittrick followed with a double down the right field line and then Huggins tied it up with one swing of the bat. The sophomore catcher belted her second homer of the season down the left field line and UCO was back in the game.

The Bronchos went ahead 4-3 in the fifth. Shayla Harper reached on an error to start the inning, took second on a fly out and went to third on a wild pitch before scooting home on Dobson's single through the left side.

Washburn had a one-out infield single in the bottom of the seventh, but Rivas induced the next two batters into fly outs to end the game.

McKittrick had two of UCO's six hits.
