Central Scorches Missouri Western

Bronchos Reach 100 Point Mark In MIAA Road Win

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team finished off a wild week of four games in four different states with a rousing 101-96 victory at Missouri Western Sunday afternoon.

UCO was led by three players who scored 20 or more and five that scored in double figures.

"They played really well on offense in the first half and made us work for everything," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Our guys did a good job of competing in that first half and not letting them run away with it. Then we did really well to keep up that level of intensity in the second half. We did some good things and I'm just proud of the guys for playing the way they did on a week like we had."

Isaiah Wade led Central with 28 points and 13 rebounds Sunday afternoon. Callen Haydon added 25 points and four assists. And Jaden Wells scored 20 points and three steals.

Central shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor Sunday, hitting 38 of 63 shots overall, 7 of 22 3-pointers, and added 18 free-throws on 26 attempts.

Central had to fight early on to remain close for the first part of the first half. Missouri Western made each one of its first seven attempts from behind the 3-point arc. The Bronchos held a 6-5 lead early in the half and spent much of the first 10 minutes playing from behind, but never trailing by more than seven, 25-18, with nine minutes to play in the opening half.

Central fought back and took a lead with just over eight minutes to play. After a Wells 3-pointer tied the game, 27-27, with 9:08 to play in the opening half, Wade finished off a putback layup to give the Bronchos a 29-27 lead.

Central built its biggest lead of the first half with just under five minutes to play. UCO went up five, 41-36, with 4:23 to play after Haydon made a fastbreak layup on an assist from Carson Calavan.

Missouri Western responded to that with a 10-2 run to take a 46-43 lead with three minutes left in the opening half. A Shemar Smith 3-pointer with six seconds left in the half made it 50-48 and kept the Bronchos within one possession at the break.

Central shot 60 percent overall in the first half to counter Missouri Western's 10 first-half 3-pointers.

UCO tied the game early in the second half on two Wade free-throws before MWSU went on a short 6-0 run to take a 56-50 lead with 18:22 to play. But Central responded. Wells hit a 3-pointer and Wade made a layup and-1 to tie the game, 56-56, not even a minute later. Then Wells hit another 3-pointer to give the Bronchos a lead it would not relinquish after that point.

A 10-0 Broncho run midway through the second half gave Central some comfort in its lead. That built a 12-point lead for UCO. In just 1:27 of game time, a Wade layup and two Smith dunks gave the Bronchos a 6-0 run. Haydon and Wade added two more layups to give the Bronchos an 88-76 lead with 4:33 to play in the game.

Missouri Western cut it to single digits late, and as little as three points in the final 30 seconds, but the Bronchos willed out the victory in the end.

Central played a rare four-game week which included three road games. UCO went 3-1 this week and 2-1 on the road. The Bronchos also averaged 89.2 points per game this week.

Wade finished 12 of 17 from the floor and added 4 of 7 free-throws. Haydon was a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor, 2-for-2 from outside, and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Wells was 5-for-13 overall and 3-for-9 from behind the arc. He also hit all seven free-throw attempts Sunday afternoon.

Camryn Givens added 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting. He made one 3-pointer. Givens also had one made 3-pointer. Smith finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Calavan had two points and six assists.

Central Oklahoma will return home next week and only play two games. The Bronchos host Fort Hays State Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House. UCO will host Newman next Saturday, also at 3:30 p.m. at Hamilton.
