Central Oklahoma Comes Up Short

Bronchos Lose To Hot-Shooting Fort Hays State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost to Fort Hays State for the second time in the last five days, coming up short 89-79 Wednesday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Central (8-7) fell into an early hole and spent most of the 40 minutes working to close a deficit. The Bronchos did on several occasions in the second half get within striking distance but UCO couldn't ever break through.

"You got to give credit to Fort Hays for hitting their shots," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "They got off to a great start and every time we got close, they hit another big shot. I think we played well, just not well enough to keep up."

Fort Hays State hit 17 3-pointers Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers of Hays, Kansas made each and every one of their first nine attempts from behind the arc and finished the day 17-for-26, a blistering 65.4 percent.

Isaiah Wade did all he could in the effort, pouring in 26 points on 9 of 15 shooting to go with seven rebounds, three steals, and three assists. He was also 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Davon Richardson had a monster game off the bench, scoring 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting. He hit two 3-pointers and made all four of his free-throws to with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Camryn Givens added 14 points to help Central offensively, with the junior forward making 4 of 7 shots.

Central Oklahoma led 3-0 after Jaden Wells made the first basket of the game, then Fort Hays State hit a 3-pointer on its first possession to tie the game. After FHSU took a 5-3 lead, Wade slammed home his first basket to tie the game for a second time in the first two minutes.

Carson Calavan hit a 3-pointer to give Central an 8-7 lead just a moment later. But after Hays retook the lead 9-8 on the fifth lead change in three minutes, the Bronchos never led or tied again. Fort Hays, in hitting its first nine 3-pointers, built a 20-10 lead early the half. The Tigers led by as many as 18 with 9:33 to play.

UCO then began its mountainous climb back. The Bronchos did cut it to eight at halftime, trailing 43-35 at the break.

Wade got the Bronchos within two just three and half minutes into the second half. He had six points during an 8-2 run by UCO to open the half. Givens made a layup on the first possession of the second half before Wade scored the next six.

Hays responded again to that, scoring 13 of the next 20 to go ahead 58-50 with 13 minutes to go. Richardson then went on a personal 6-0 run of his own to pull the Bronchos to within a basket, 58-56, with 11:34 to play in the first half. Central had it to two again when Givens hit one of his two 3-pointers in the game. That made it 67-65 with eight minutes to play.

The Bronchos trailed by three with 6:30 to play and forced a turnover before Callen Haydon received a technical foul. FHSU went on a 6-0 run after that and the Bronchos never got closer than six down the stretch.

Fort Hays State hit 54.7 percent of its total shots Wednesday afternoon. The Bronchos hit 50.9 percent. UCO finished 7 of 19 from outside and 16-for-22 from the free-throw line.
