Central Lets Tigers Slip Away

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team had a four-game win streak snapped at Fort Hays State Saturday when the Bronchos lost 84-82 in the MIAA matchup.

Carson Calavan missed a long 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer and Central Oklahoma is now 7-6 on the season.

"We still had a shot on the last play but we just didn't get it to go," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "I thought we played well today. We let it get away and we got move on and get ready to play them again on Wednesday."

Isaiah Wade led the Bronchos with 25 points and 10 rebounds and Callen Haydon scored 19 points to go with three assists, but UCO came up short in the end.

Calavan had eight points and was 2-for-2 from behind the arc before the last shot.

The Bronchos led by one point, 42-41, at halftime and after 7-0 run to start the second half, Central Oklahoma held the lead for most of the remainder of the game. UCO held the lead for 17:28 of the second half. It wasn't until a Fort Hays State 3-pointer with 2:20 left in the game that Hays took a lead, 76-75.

Wade gave the Bronchos the lead back, 79-78, with two free-throws with 1:19 to play. But Hays answered with a 3-pointer and took the lead again and for the last time.

After a layup by Hays moments later, Haydon hit a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game. Hays made the first of two and Central called a timeout with six seconds to play. Calavan's shot would've been the game-winner had it gone.

Central did plenty right on offense in the first half.

Haydon knocked down a 3-pointer to score the first points of the half for the Bronchos. After Wade scored, Central had three more consecutive 3-point plays. Wells hit two 3-pointers and Wade had a putback layup go in as he was fouled and added the free-throw. Central had a 14-12 lead when Wade made that free-throw out of the under-15 media timeout.

Central led 21-14 lead when Calavan hit a 3-pointer. Conner Calavan had the assist on the play. Then a minute later, Carson found Conner for another three that made it 24-19. Haydon, Wells, and Carson Calavan all made another 3-pointer later in the half to help UCO to a 42-41 lead at halftime.

UCO shot 50 percent in the first half, making 16 of 32 shots. The Bronchos also shot 50 percent from behind the arc, hitting 8 of 16 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half the Bronchos shot 16 of 32 again, but only 3 of 9 from behind the arc. UCO finished the game 32-64 overall and 11 of 25 from deep. The Bronchos also hit 7 of 10 free-throws in the game.

Wells finished with nine points off three 3-pointers. He also had eight rebounds and three assists. Smith had seven points and three rebounds. Camryn Givens had four points to go with nine rebounds.

Davon Richardson (four), Conner Calavan (three) and Seth Hurd (three) also scored on the afternoon.

Central Oklahoma will have a quick turnaround as the Bronchos play at Missouri Western Sunday at 2:30 p.m. UCO makes the 275-mile trip for its third road game in four days. Central Oklahoma will get a chance to see Hays again when the Bronchos host Fort Hays State next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.
