Central Falls Short In Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost to Northeastern State for the second time in as many days Sunday, falling 96-89 in the road game of the weekend home-and-home between the longtime rivals.

Central Oklahoma is now 10-9 on the season. The Bronchos have three games left in the 2020-21 regular season this week. UCO will play Missouri Western, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern.

"It's been a tough weekend and we just need to put it behind us," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "There were times we didn't play great and they made us pay for it. We need to focus on the next one."

Central Oklahoma held a big second half lead Sunday, part of 11 lead changes in a game that was also tied eight times. UCO led by as many as 12 following a big run to start the second half. Central outscored NSU 15-3 in the first 3:15 of the half.

Isaiah Wade made a layup to start things off before Camryn Givens and Jaden Wells both hit 3-pointers. Davon Richardson made a layup before Wells struck again. A pair of free throws by Wells after that turned a 39-39 halftime score into a 54-42 lead for the Bronchos with 16:45 to go in the second half.

Central still led by 11 when Shemar Smith made a fastbreak layup with 12:16 to go and still led by nine with 9:40 to go after Givens made a jumper and a free-throw. Northeastern kept chipping away at the lead and eventually cracked it.

NSU tied it 76-76 with 5:21 to play but Central took the lead right back with a pair of Davon Richardson free throws. Another tie and another Richardson basket gave UCO the lead again. The teams alternated leads again once more, but when NSU went up 83-82 with 3:08 to play, the Bronchos never led again.
